Now that's what I need!!! Do you know how they work? Do they have some sort of ratchet in the big end that will slip once the torque is met? Do you know where I could find them?

Dummy, I have no personal experience with those, but they seem like a good idea so long as you have room to work with a 7" extension and if the price is right.

HARBOR FREIGHT has 'em too.

Prevent over tightening of wheel lug nuts! Won’t break studs or damage alloy wheels. Color- and letter-coded for quick reference. Use with any impact wrench, even those with an extended anvil. Includes carrying case.
65 to 150 ft. lbs. torque range
7'' overall length

They look pretty neat, but as Bird mentioned, there are places where it'd be impossible to be another 7" away from a bolt/nut.

This is true, but usually working on mower decks it's a just a matter of jacking it a little bit higher. I prefer removing mine and using a bench grinder versus the angle grinder method.

I had an expensive lesson using my 1/2" impact instead of torque wrench (or even "breaker bar")

Flat front tire on Brutus. Took tire off, fixed flat. Put tire back on, used impact wrench to tighten and went on my business.

A week or two later KA-CHUNK. The lugs had worked loose, the rim came off the "collar" it rides on for support (lugs only hold tire on this collar evidently) none the less, with the weight of the machine on the lugs...all six of them popped out like popcorn & I had to replace the entire hub/bearing setup which set me back almost $500.

Next time, I will install with impact wrench maybe but be SURE to tighten with a torque wrench or my breaker bar.

… I had an expensive lesson using my 1/2" impact instead of torque wrench…

Not as expensive as my lesson about 15 years ago…

My buddy had just serviced my Wheel Horse Snowblower…{absolutely nothing could kill it}, he put the engine shroud back on and then his shop phone rang…

While he was upstairs talking on the phone, I grabbed his ¾” impact gun and proceeded to put the large nut on the end of a shaft… as I pulled the trigger of the impact gun… I heard him scream…
J O H N …..

At that same moment the nut spun and fell on the concrete floor…

Peter walked over and said, “Well John, you might as well throw that snowblower away now…

…You, just sheared the end of the crankshaft off…” /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
