I picked up a used Woods 5' cutter. Did not notice any leaks but when I put oil in the gearbox and spun the pto by hand the oil leaked out. This happened overnite. This is an old unit and want to use it for the summer.

How safe is the "cornhead grease' in the gearbox method. Do I use straight grease and just pack it in half way up like I would for the 90 weight oil? I also heard that you can use half grease and half 90 weight oil. Opinions?

I plan to tear the unit down in the fall and replace the bearings and seal at end of season.

Yes you can mix gear lube and grease. Just make sure the gear box doesn't run dry or you will destroy the gears and bearings. Consider using 75W-140 gear lube also since it is a little thicker.

I have tried the grease and oil combo. The oil mixes with the grease over time and still leaks out, although slower. I've been using straight grease packed almost full. It still runs out a bit after hours of use on a hot day but not much. I have been running this way for over five years without issue.
