I'm in the market for a new tiller. I have a 30hp tractor. Looking at a 4ft or 5 ft model. What's your opinion of the Woods brand?

Hi,

Welcome to TBN.

I have a Woods GTO60 (60" offset tiller) at my dealership. As soon as his schedule and mine coincide, he'll deliver it. Therefore, I can't give you any first hand experience yet. By November I expect to have some experience with it, if you can wait that long. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

From what I could see, Woods tends to be among the higher price implement manufacturers, and their tillers are no different. (Actually, their tillers are made by a company in Italy, possibly Malletti(sp?), but I'm sure someone here can give the specifics on that.) My Kubota dealer is also a Woods dealer and my preference is to send as much of my business his way as I can. I also believe that in most cases you get what you pay for, so I figured I'd spend the extra $$$ and go with the Woods.

That said, there are a good number of members here on TBN that can attest to the quality and performance of cheaper units (some near half the price of the woods!). Depending upon your usage and the availability of a dealer nearby, I would keep other manufacturers in mind as well.

I think I paid $1750 for my GTO60, which I believe is a fair price from what I've seen in my research. The GT60 (without offset) is about $200 less. The 52" is about $100 less.

I opted for the 60" over the 52" 'cause I figured that if my ground was a bit too hard for the 60" width initially, I could just remove the tines from one flange and reduce the working width to about 52". Then, in future years, I'd have the full 60" width. I opted for the offset feature 'cause I figured it might allow me more maneuvering options on my postage stamp property.

Do a search on rototillers and I'm sure you'll find a wealth of opinions and options.

Good Luck,

~Rick

CCM sells a ton of tillers 90% of the ones around here are them the dealers right up the road the other 10% is kk. I've seen post people saying CCM is great deal and super heavy duty it'd check them out first..

Thanks shady1701,
The Woods is made by Maletti and a good unit. It is a premium brand and it will do a good job. Maybe I ought to raise my prices, people just can't believe the value of a CCM tiller until they see it first hand.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I've just started looking at the different tillers. Local dealer carries the King Kutter brand. Any info on this one?

I've have the King Kutter II 60" tiller for several years now.

Just thoughts:

check for clearance between the tines and the side and top. Small rocks can get hung up in there and break tines.

Accessability of grease zerks.

Availability of parts.

Side shift feature

Slip clutch and the ease with which it can be removed. ie. can you get your hand in back to push the pin or turn the collar.

Ease of adjusting depth regulating shoes.

How well is the drive side chain/gear casing protected from bottom wear.

Tine RPM [ lower the better for less damage when hitting things other than soil.]
