I have a fairly new SS60 snowblower and I've sheared a few PTO Shaft shear bolts due to rocks and/or chunks of ice. I am using a Grade 8 - 5/16 x 1" bolt as directed by a technician from Woods.

No big deal although I have encountered a new problem today and my opertors manual does not have a parts list or schematic.

This morning I apparently sheared another key/bolt/pin for the auger ...I think

The PTO shaft turns, the chain turns, and the sprocket turns, but the auger does not.

I do not see where a bolt/pin is missing or broken??. I am assuminmg there is a pin similar to a walk behind type snowblower but do not see it.

Thanks as always for any help

I just came across a schematic that shows a 5/16 x 1 shear bolt, but does not really show where it goes. A 1" bolt is not long enough to go thru the auger??

The schematic also shows a 1/4 x 1/4 x 2" key

cny,

So you're saying now Woods is recommending a grade 8 shear bolt on the PTO shaft? Hmmmm...I've never sheared by PTO shaft bolt and I switched out the grade 8 to a grade 5.

There is another shear bolt that protects the auger, but from memory I can't remember where it connects exactly. I'm at work now, and I'll be heading out to a Camping & RV show later, but when I get in late tonight I'll try to remember to check into it. I HAVE sheared this bolt a few times. On my SS60, it is the same size bolt as the drive shaft shear bolt.

P.S. ON EDIT: I'm having some flashbacks here, but it's been a long time since I replaced the bolt. I seem to remember the shear bolt connecting the large chain driven sprocket to the auger shaft...somehow. Hope this helps, I'll try to have more detail later.

Looking at my manual there are a total of four keys that are used in the drive train of the auger and fan.

Item (# 47) 1/4" 1/4" x 2" Woods number 100-3-0989
is a Key right at the gear chain sprocket on the auger

There is also a key on the other end of the chain drive sprocket.
Item # 48 1/4" 1/4" x 1" Woods number 100-3-2545

Either of these would stop the auger from turning.

The next two keyways would stop both the fan and the auger from turning.

Item # 46 is on the input side of the gear box (item 25) and is the part that connects to the pto shaft.
Item # 46 1/4" 1/4" x 11/2" Woods number 106-3-0529

There is also a key in the output side of the gear box (item 28)
Item # 49 1/4" 1/4" x 21/2" Woods number 120-3-0661
This would stop the fan and auger from rotating

I think you could take the woods numbers to any tractor dealer and they shold be able to find the parts for you? My Kubota dealer has all of the Woods SS-60 parts on their computer.

OK...I'm home now and went out to look at my SS60.

It's not mounted on the tractor (yes...I know it's winter...it's a long story :) ) it's on a dolly up against the wall so I couldn't get a great look at it, but I was able to see enough of it.

The shear bolt that protects the auger goes through the large sprocket driven by the drive chain. If it's there, it's easy to see it. If it's not there, it's pretty hard to find the hole. The sprocket is painted black and it's hard to see the hole. You'll have to rotate the auger assembly until the holes line up. Again, from what I recall, it was a bit of a pain in the neck. As I'm making this post, I think it would be a good idea to put a paint mark around the hole where this bolt goes through the sprocket to make the hole easier to find when the bolt shears.

Hope this helps.
