Woods Toothbar

Hello,
I have a jx75case ih,4wd.I purchased a woods extra heavy duty tooth bar for it.After opening the box I,m not sure if it was the right choice.It seems to be made well but what concerns me is the design for my application.Most tooth bars that I have seen go on top of cutting edge.This is made with two heavy pieces of metal in a v that traps the cutting edge.It look very strong but the cutting edge becomes very blunt. My main use for now is building a pond.I need to move dirt from piles left from exavator.My main concern is it going to take more force to penetrate the dirt with the toothbar than without it.The cutting edge seems very blunt,almost 3/4 inch flat.Maybe the teeth opens ground enough?(any help)?

I would not worry about the blunt edge. The teeth will be doing the work. I believe Henro has a tooth bar like this and seems to love it. He will hopefully chime in here. I have ground down cutting edges before to sharpen them up, sort of like mower blades. Use a small angle grinder. Good luck.

It sounds like Woods has adopted a design similar to that used by H&H Sales . I have an H&H toothbar with a V edge and really like the extra metal on the bucket lip.

Use it a lot and you will sharpen that cutting edge. Even until then, the toothbar will make the digging much easier. It sounds like a good investment.

I have the Woods toothbar on my bucket and it works great. I do not think you will have any problems with it...

Keep in mind your edge will no longer be cutting.That will be done by the sharper points of the teeth.Try it out and I think you will be pleased.Have Fun!

Yes, the teeth will be doing the initial cutting, but you still have to push that bevel through the ground. It will work & it should be strong enough, but I never was in love with those V-type toothbars. Then again, even with all the toothbars available out there who can find the perfect one? They all seem to have their compromises. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Been following this interresting thread for a bit... Some of the toothbars have 1" teeth and some have 1-1/2". Which size would be preferred for digging in very hard clay. I tend to think that the 1" would go in easier, but I need a second opinion. Any help out there...???

I have the same Woods heavy duty toothbar, in 72" version. It looks just like the H&H sales toothbar Aloha was talking about. Mine works great and protects the cutting edge too. I had the standard toothbar ordered, but when I received it, it was too long. Dealer sent it back and I was sent the Heavy Duty toothbar in its place. Had to wait about 12 weeks to get a toothbar (6 weeks for each bar.) but I am happy that the dealer and/or Woods sent me the more expensive one for waiting. I think it was priced around $100 more when I priced it. It also weighs about 20 lbs. more
I think your toothbar will work as good as any other. Works better than a cutting edge alone when it comes to digging up brush and moving it. Great for digging in hard soil too. Lots of uses. I wouldn't worry for a minute.

This may be the case, but I have never noticed a problem with the V shaped edge myself. And I have cut a fair amount of earth with mine.

The thing I personally like the best about the V design is that it makes the lower lip MUCH STRONGER than the bare bucket is. My guess probably stronger than non-V type tooth bars do, but they also must help strenghten the lower lip.

If I had a chance to change to a different type toothbar, I would not. I like what I have too much. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I order the same toothbar for the Woods loader on my tractor. When it came, I was dismayed to see the leading edge. It looked nothing like th epicture in my dealer's catalog. I brought it home to test fit and found that the way they had welded the two parts of the "V" together prevented it from seating on my bucket (the lip ended up hitting just a few of the weld spots). I sent it back and got the next step down. It still doesn't fit as well as some I've seen here on TBN (imagine that... a Woods toothbar for a Woods loader that doesn't fit well), bu tit works just fine.

I've since been told that the heavy-duty model they originally sent me is better suited to higher-horsepower, higher traction skid-steer type applications than for my TC33D.

Not that you probably need another opinion, but I also have the Woods toothbar, V shape, and am extremely happy with it. The teeth break into the soil and loosen enough of it to get me a full bucket most every time. I'm well satisfied and I think you will be too. John

Tinytractor, I am not sure what effect length will have on digging,however I would think longer would be an advantage when lifting brush or ripping soil.

Creeper... I called H&H today about their standard and heavy duty toothbars...
I was told that the 72" STD toothbar (1-3/4" x 4" teeth, 88 lbs) would be the one that I wanted for my Kubota L3430. They recommend the HD toothbar (2-1/2" x 5" teeth, 134 lbs)for backhoes/SSL's. The "Landscape" toothbar uses STD teeth with a 3" spacing and weighs a wooping 165 lbs.
I was more worried about having the power to drive the wider teeth into hard clay than the length of the teeth. I use a york rake and pallet forks on the QA FEL for brush cleanup. Now to start saving some money... they don't sell direct... You and your dealer set the price.
Have to add this last little bit.... I didn't try to hijack this thread and point it towards H&H. The dealer that I normally do my business with stopped dealing with WOOD's. He said "people aren't going to pay the money for the quality". I left it at that and then started thinking... was he talking to me?

Hey guys. New here, never posted before been reading for a few months.

Start saving is a good way to put it. I got a quote today for the H&H standard toothbar for my 61" JD bucket...have a 430 loader w/61" bucket on a 4410.

Bar: $330
Steel Surcharge: $25
Freight: $65
+ tax

Maybe you guys should check with www.markhamwelding.com for a good toothbar at a good price. Mine is Woods, but members say Markham's bar is a great deal and good people to deal with as well. John
