Woodstove versus wood boiler ROI

ejb,

Your questions finally turned on the light bulb a bit...

I used a program called RESFEN to run numbers on the payback on putting certain kinds of windows in our house. The program takes in the energy efficiency numbers that are on all new windows, the area of the windows on each side of the house, size of house, and other factors and tells you how much money it will cost to heat and cool the house.

I pulled out my old calculations and they look to be pretty close to what is happening in our house.

The software is here -> RESFEN website

The code is free since it is paid for with tax payer dollars.

My version 3.x and they have a 5.0 version. My version only does calcuations for electric and oil usage. BUT it does tell you how many kilowatt hours you would need to heat/cool the house. You could convert that KW hours to BTUs and look at what the wood stove puts out to give you a ball park number.

There are other programs on the URL I listed. I seem to remember a bunch of programs/spreadsheets I found from the Canadian government regarding energy usage. You might be able to dig a little and get some software the gets you close to your answer. All of the software was free.

Later,
Dan
