For lace-up boots, I prefer Danner.

Something that will make any boot fit much better is a good quality set of footbeds. Our local hiking/camping store sells Sole footbeds, which are heated in the oven for a few minutes and then mold themselves to your feet. A well-spent $40.

For serious mud stomping, a cheap set of rubber ones from the hardware store can't be beat. The kind intended for concrete work.

Hi Dave. I used to be a big Danner fan (which before that it was always Red Wings) as well until I got a set of Vasque. I am on my third pair now (actually two sets I trade back and forth) The most durable, water proof and delightful boot I have owned. I hike and work in the same boot. I have not tried some of the other boots mentioned here like Doc Martins, but I cannot imagine a better boot then the Vasque type I have.

I'm diabetic with neuropothy. (nerve damage in feet from high blood sugar) sugar levels now in check and have been for 10+ years with diet only (no drugs or insulin needed) But the nerve damage was already done. I HAVE to wear good boots. For my job, I have to have steel toed boots. I tried every brand imaginable. Wolverine Durashocks were 1st OFF the list. Finally bought a pair of Timerland "Pro Series" 24/7's. They last me a year to year and a half. That's sloping around in the mud, wearing them at work and on the farm. VEry comfortable, and they come in all sorts of sizes and widths. The wife has to threaten me to get me out of them sometimes. I want to wear them all the time. Most comfortable boots or shoes I've ever owned.

But that's MY feet. Your results may vary.

Well, I used to be a Red wing fan until I tried the Danners.

I wish I had heard about the Vasque three weeks ago, because I just got a new set of Danners. It will probably take me 2-3 years to wear them out & I am probably too tight-fisted to get another set before then.

The absolutely best boots I ever had were Santa Rosa brand (no longer made). For years they took me everywhere, including into & out of the Grand Canyon, and that big volcano you can hike into in Hawaii, forget the name.

I never did wear them out, 20 years ago my Lab puppy got ahold of them and chewed a big hole in one. Probably an OK deal though -- she was the best dog I have ever had, or even heard of anyone having -- other than the boots that is.

If your Danner fit well are water proof and last then you have everything I have. I get my Vasque at REI. About $210.

What ever you buy do not go "because they are cheap" route. buy something that will give you support and comfort. At the end of the day you should not be happy to get those darn boots off.

If your feet are sore at the end of the day get rid of the boots and try a different pair.

The most uncomfortable boots I have owned have been Lehigh and now a pair of CarHartt boots that I will suffer through. I have always worn Redwings and loved every pair of them. I should have never tried the Carhartt's.

My preferred work boots have been Whites (out of Spokane, WA). White's Boots, Fishing Equipment, Outdoor Clothing - White's Outdoor

They take a little bit to break in off the get go, but after that, you forget you've got them on. I'm on my second pair of 10"-top Smoke Jumpers in about 6 years...the first pair lasted my 5 and I wear them every day for about 12 hours a day. And, the first pair didn't really wear out, my wife just got tired of me wearing the same old pair, so she got me a new pair and retired my old pair to "yard work". Not cheap boots ($425 with steel toes), but when they wear out, you can get them rebuilt by sending them back to the factory for about half the price of a new pair - depending on how trashed they are. Where I grew up, they were pretty much the only thing that the loggers and woodsmen wore.

For hunting I have a pair of Rockie Insulated Boots. They are by far more confortable than any other boot I've worn.

Best $180 I EVER spent! Not only are they comfortable, they even keep my frozen toes warm in the dead of winter. Mine will be 6 years old this January & it looks like they will be good for a couple more years (if I don't do something stupid to them).

Yo LC
White smoke jumpers here as well, if you skip and cross and go back down again you can avoid the White bite during break in and daily. you can also order the custom to your foot ones.....
