Workboots

Hey WV...

I personally like the slip-on type boots for working around the place. I bought a pair of John Deere /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif boots at the local Co-op about a year ago. I don't know who makes them for JD, but they're well made, comfortable, and easy to get into and out of.

Right on about the boots. Neat idea, Ace bandages. I was thinking of using my old REI gaitors (gaiters?) for the same purpose (entirely covers the laces and prevents getting weed seeds and stuff stuck in there). There is a good tick repellant that you put on your clothes not your skin. It lasts through several washings. It was developed for the military. Ticks don't want to crawl across clothing treated with it. IT IS NOT DEET. It is a synthesized version of a natural plant substance (from the pyrecanthus, I think)

Maybe someone will recall a brand name for us?????

The Tick Repellent I think you are talking about is Permethrin. It is the stabilized form of Pyrethrin. (Pyrethrins are a natural insecticide produced by the the chrysanthemum plant.)

A brand name of Permethrin spray is 'REPEL Permanone'. I just ordered a spray can from Gemplers.

PatrickG,

The old style Ace bandages I'm having a tough time finding. The new ones don't use the little clips but are self grabing. Thave have worked for three or four work days so far. They still supposed to be self grabing after washing but I have not washed them yet. I like them so far. I buy one roll and cut off the length I need, 24-30 inches per leg.

I have tried DEET and Permithion(sp). I sprayed Permithion(sp) on my clothes once and it did nothing. I soaked the clothes and dried the clothes per the instructions. Did not do squat! I still had chiggers and ticks climbing up my legs. So far I find long pants, Ace bandages, a brush and frequent leg checks as the best answer.... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I get a health news letter that just had some information on DEET, Permition(sp) and other bug juice. Suprisingly they said DEET was the most effective thing to use for at least squeeters and if used in low dozes, I think it was 30% solution it was perfectly safe. I think kids were not supposed to be exposed to more than 10%. I can try to find the article if anyone wants to know for sure....

Hope this helps...

I went by the gin today to get a couple of gallons of diazinon and the guy was telling me how great this new Permethrin is; works as well as diazinon, safe for pets, doesn't smell, etc. I don't know anything about it yet, and don't know whether he knows or not, but at $27.95 a quart it ought to be good.
