Is track that’s been sitting for 45 years still useable? Or is that considered scrap? Also wondered why some abandoned rails are left there and some are taken up and reused? I’m guessing track that’s in below average condition isn’t worth picking up? I’m sure accessibility is part of it. Or maybe it’s the #/foot it weighs?
It looks pretty good. It’s not buried in wet ground. Amazing that much iron would be left to rot into the ground instead of recycle or re-use!

If its of value, find the owner and offer them $&&$.. Those rails may have been used when installed there. I'd have to guess the company is not short on brains and it wasn't worth retailing them.

If I were looking for 2 length of rail, where would I go?

I am thinking about building a new chicken coop as a replica of a Denver & Rio Grande caboose. 16' long, 7' wide. I would build as a non-moveable building on posts that are hidden by fake wheels (would love a set of railroad trucks, but don't think I would be able to find them). Here is the original I took pictures of this past fall.

Good luck finding a scrap yard take rails (or any other railroad metal) without specific paperwork.

When I walk the old abandoned tracks in my little community, I notice an area where there are 50-100 LONG lengths of track just sitting in a pile.
What is the value of it and why doesn稚 the railroad want to retrieve them? They are easily accessible

Can you pinpoint them on a map? Sometimes from google earth you can see the scars from RR yards in the woods.

Check out the Antler’s Inn Train Car accommodations:

Accommodations

The train cars were once actual working railroad cars. Choose from one of three identical cabooses or a wooden rail car. Refurbished within the original framework of the car to provide, family-fun accommodations. Each caboose houses the original cupola with seating, so your little ones, or the young at heart, can oversee the train just like a real conductor. All have climate control, beds, baths, living area with TV, efficiency kitchens and include an outdoor gas grill with picnic table.

One of my neighbors bought an entire caboose and set it on a small section of track. He had it remodeled into a guest house. Living area in the front, bunk beds and kitchen in the raised middle, and bathroom in the back. The contractor had a hard time working on it. The slight movement of the caboose on its suspension made him sea sick. It was a cute little guest house.

We have a local hardware store with an couple active sidings and an inactive siding next to it. A retired pastor lived in a caboose on the inactive siding for many many years! Now its empty, but a couple cabooses just sitting there parked.
