This was the Singer Sewing Machine factory in South Bend at it's peak.

And this is the google earth view of how it looks today. Only the easternmost building remains, and it's dilapidated and crumbling.

The back of it, facing north, still has the Singer signage on it.

Here's a link to a nice page that shows a lot more pictures, and has a picture of the only locomotive of theirs that operated inside the plant. It's a little electric loco, now housed in a museum down in Noblesville, IN.

Amazing what the American quest for 'getting it cheaper' has done to American industry isn't it?

Most likely. You have any pictures of the old South Bend Lathe Company on Sample Street by chance? Another American Icon down the crapper.

I did my 30 & out at Buick's home facility in Flint, '76 to '06.

(Facts 11, 10, 36, 04, 40, 86, 29, & 09 in that order, no time in 03, 31, 05, 12, 70, 78, 81, or 25. btw )

Anyway, the mile-long site is now a brownfield from end to end.

A while back Mahindra was shopping the site for a plant to produce a proposed new line of mail delivery vehicles.

If that happens someday I suspect it will be a long tome coming.

Before I retired I delivered many loads of steel there. Had to be the most unproductive workers anywhere. All looking for a place to hide from work. Amazing anything got done.

I remember those days and those types of workers. Usually overpaid and showered with benefits and retirement I could only dream of.
No wonder the rails are 1/2 gone. All the factories became so overpaid & unproductive, they went under

Strange name for a kid, Edsel. Of course my wife is a RE Olds, great granddaughter. Ransome is a strange name for a boy too.

Please tell her I enjoy my 1905 Curved Dash Old immensely... as a kid I saw a calendar picture of one and set my sights on one...

We have quite a few steel trestles like that still standing here in the rust belt. Many of them have 100 tall trees engulfing them now, so more difficult to get good pictures.
Here is the Elkview Viaduct, built 120 years ago, now & back then. Still operated by East Penn Railroad.
