Electrically controlled pneumatic brakes, from:

As previously discussed, for purposes of this updated analysis PHMSA and FRA are using an estimate of $7,800 per tank car to retrofit with ECP brakes.
...
PHMSA and FRA estimated that 32,582 tank cars would be required to have ECP brakes in the low range scenario. In the high range, 43,430 tank cars would be required to have ECP brakes.
I'm not understanding why brakes on a few tankers, let's say in the middle of the train, would keep a derailment from happening. If, let's say for argument sake, a rail breaks and cars start to derail 10 back from the powerhead. At normal operating speeds, all cars after the first one hits the dirt will be skidding to a stop, weather there brakes were on or not. Of course as soon as as a two cars are separated, all train brakes go on max.

A party at the bridge? A short statement on the reverse of this beat up photo states that we are looking at a bridge "spanning 18 mile creek near Grand View, Wisconsin circa 1890." The people seem to be almost all women. What might they be doing there? Grand View, Wisconsin is located three station stops southwest of Ashland Junction, Wisconsin on a lone from Ashland to Trego.

So a question from someone who knows very little about trains. Do all the cars in a freight train have brakes?

Yes and they are all largely the same. Engine brakes are a tad different and I'm sure other cars with some special application might be different..

WAY different on the San Francisco cable cars! Foot pedals to force steel brake shoes against the wheels. Wooden blocks that press down on the track. And the
emergency brake lever. This forces an 18-inch steel wedge into the steel slot between the tracks, stopping the car immediately. (The force is so great that sometimes it takes a cutting torch to get the wedge out of the slot.)

Maybe this one?

In Duluth MN yesterday a bit of Rail and Sail as a CP Eco runs to Rices Point yard light power while the Burns Harbor and American Mariner load at CN Dock 6.

To put that dock in perspective, the Burns Harbor is 1000' long and the America Mariner is 730. There's a large gap between them.

"Dock #6, named the DM&N/DM&IR Ore Dock No. 6 Approach, at 1.1 miles in length, is still active and used for loading Iron Range Taconite onto USS Steel ships. Currently the largest active dock in the world, Dock #6 has a capacity of 153,600 tons of ore."

Yes indeed, seems that everything in our steel industry is BIG. I toured through a pellet plant once before my father-in-law retired. This photo is of the crushers he worked in. They were over 30 ft long and about 16 tall.
