Our infrastructure and factories look so old and tired.

A detail that made the India rail disaster so severe: That was an iron ore train standing on the siding where the express got shunted into. Each US ore hopper might be 100 tons or more while India uses 5'6" rail gauge which is 10 inches, almost 20%, wider than US Standard Gauge. So each iron ore car there may be much heavier than we see here.

Essentially, the 80 mph passenger express ran into an immovable object.

I also read that each of the two express trains had over 1,000 reserved seats, which is about the national average number of passengers for a train in India. US is less, no?

Maybe this for the centercab?

And the one in La Paz, maybe.

Bruce
Yep! That's both of them. Thanks.

The one that says it's in Plainfield is kinda interesting, in that the area shows up on maps as Plainfield, always has. However, no one calls it Plainfield except mapping companies and new weather forecasters. 🙃 Most folks call that area part of New Carlisle. In fact, most of it has been swallowed by New Carlisle.

Things of interest in that are besides corn fields are a sheet steel plant:

A brand new natural gas electric power generating plant.
A large Unifrax factory.
Several smaller factories.
The Studebaker Proving Grounds, now owned by Navistar ( we see test trucks driving through town and the area pretty often).

A small solar farm.
A LARGE solar farm has been started.

And they're still in the running for a now $3B battery plant.

There's also an engine that's been sitting on a siding at a grain elevator in La Paz, IN about 16 miles south of me for at least 20 years. I think Conagra owns it. Google street views shows it sitting with the doors open. Used to be a train station at that location. I went with my folks to pick up my cousin there back in the 60s.

The overhead view clearly shows three same size fans on the aft carbody, and the lack of "porches" at each end, like SD40s have would make this most likely a former BN GP40 or GP40-2.
Next time I go down old US31, I'll have to take a look at it.

Yeah, it's south and east of the overpass.

There used to be a different one sitting there 20+ years ago. I can't remember the type or colors, etc. but it was similar in shape to a SW1000, and that's all I remember about it. Then the current one showed up. I've only seen it moved once in 20+ years, working cars at the elevator on the west side of the overpass.

As I mentioned before, I'm pretty sure that's the location of the La Paz train station. No longer there, as far as I can see. Back in the 60s a cousin came from DC to stay with us for the summer, and we picked her up there.

In this link that BCP posted,

there are a bunch of pictures of it.

Also, look in the background of this photo from 2012... there's another engine, maybe the one I remember before the green one?

I think the CN 2240 had the Draper Taper cab design, Dofasco trucks and 3/8 armor plate ,first time for this, for the nose cab.
