The locomotive on the right in the second picture is an EMD SD45. It had the 20 cylinder 645E3 engine that put out 3,600HP. The flared radiators and dynamic brake blister are the tip off as to the the model number. The units had some teething problems when introduced 1965, with broken crankshafts due to crankcase flex. That was fixed and the later model 20V645E3s were nearly trouble free. The blocks on EMD prime movers are fabricated, using cast steel main bearing saddles.
In 1995 EMD introduced a 20V710G3 engine, that's 710 cubic inches per cylinder, or 14,200 cu. in. of displacement putting out 5,000HP.

This is the Monon High Bridge located in Delphi, IN. It is the 2nd highest RR bridge in Indiana. CSX stopped running trains over it around 1987 and had plans to donate it to the trail system in the area.

On February 13, 2017, two young girls were dropped off to hike the trail and bridge. They never returned for pick up, and the next day their bodies were found near the bridge. A suspect was arrested in October 2022 and is currently in jail awaiting trial.

The trial and bridge work has since been completed, as seen in this video.

A link to a wiki page about the two girls. May the rest in peace.

Had a project once where we rebuilt some EMD engines, down to the block.

Cannot remember if I posted this or not but I used to contract haul the cranks and cam shafts for EMD in McCook, Illinois, 2 trips a week from Park-Ohio Industries off Harvard Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio to EMD on specially built trailers (that Park-Ohio) had built just for hauling them They were 40 foot open top with tarps and steel sided and the trailers had hardwood racks inside that the cranks and cams fit in. The cradles were all lined with heavy felt.. Park would overhead crane the cranks and cams into the trailers and EMD would unload the the same way. I never had to touch anything as they would at both ends roll and unroll the top tarps. The trailers would be pretty nasty inside as Park coated the cranks and cams with heavy oil that always dripped on the trailer floors.

I go to be pretty good friends with the folks in McCook and that was before all the OSHA crap so I could wander around the plant and I got to watch them building locomotives as well as building the engines plus they had an over the top employees cafeteria that I would always visit for lunch. Even got a peek in the dyno room where they first article tested the engines too and got to observe finished loco's getting dyno tested out back. Pretty amazing standing next to an EMD locomotive running in notch 8. You feel it more than hear it. They used a water fall resistor bank to absorb the electricity produced by the engines and if you look on the side of any diesel electric locomotive, there will be a large plug with a cover on it. That is where they plugged the resistor bank in when testing them.

They also had tracks out back with wrecked engines on them, awaiting rebuilding.

Very interesting place if you are into mechanical stuff.

I believe they aren't there anymore however.

There's still some EMD listed in McCook, IL.

Offices, and Progress Rail/EMD. It's on EMD Drive.
