Keeping with the RR theme, here's an old Monon car full of stone that sits outside of a quarry south of Francesville, IN.

So that’s just a sign or a prop for the quarry placed there? Not an abandoned railroad?

Our local quarries are served by rail, but one pulled up the tracks and the other rarely sees a railcar.

The railroad runs parallel behind the quarry on old Monon trackage. That RR car is an old Monon car and sitting on a section of track they placed there perpendicular to the road for advertising. Just a piece of local history.

Here's a quick read history of the Monon RR. It was kind of unique, in that it was a north-south RR. Almost all RRs were east-west due to westward expansion of the US in the 1800s. (It's also one of the reasons it failed multiple times.)

It intersected many large railroads as it went from the Ohio River in the south to Lake Michigan in the north.

Some of the trackage is still in use by CSX.

Been past that before.

I've probably been by it 30-40 times between the 9 years our kids attended Purdue. That is a long, straight, 2-lane road. A lot of small towns to go through, and flat land. Kinda peaceful if you're not in a hurry.

Good video. You can actually see it (in the distance) when driving on Route 2 going west past Sandusky, Ohio.
