The lead locomotive is an General Electric ES44C4, which rides on three axle trucks, but only the leading and trailing axles are powered, making it an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement.
Couldn't make out the unit number on the trailing locomotive, but it has a different radiator, so it is probably a different variation of the ES44.
Why would they only have 2 axles driven??

Lower weight/loading per axle and enough electric motor power from two axle motors per truck. Has been common on diesel passenger locos since way back, often to increase route availability on older lines.

Not exactly a photo of Railroad tracks, but I picked up a section of rail and some spikes and hardware and made an Anvil.

I'm not sure how far back the arrangement was used, but the EMD E series of locomotives also used A1A-A1A wheel arrangements, as the were basically the power trains of two F series units on one longer chassis. Advancements in the power ratings of traction motors using AC technology has allowed a 4,400HP prime mover power four traction motors.

SEPTA, Philadelphias mass transit company just cancelled or suspended it’s order of like $180 million dollars worth of Chinese railcars because they’re junk.

Yes. We even have old telegraph poles in the rust belt.
We have a lot of Sycamores and Kentucky Coffee trees, too.

The railroad is probably doing a little better than it was 20 years ago, but it seems like they’re just hanging on. Few customers left.

In June of 1967 Clint Jones (left) and a sidekick take a break from working on the Copper Range 29 to watch #9, the Copper Country Limited climb Hancock Hill. This picture would have been taken from the Houghton side. Work was being done on the 29 in preparation for use on the Keweenaw Central RY. Photographer unknown.

One of my favorite train guys, a modeler and a working engineer.

Did someone say steam? This Hudson was rebuilt more than once and carries a 'diesel control unit' so that the engineer can operate the brakes of a diesel that often accompanies it. That addition is to save wear on the steamer's brakes as they are very costly and difficult to reline. (You guys knew that)

Anyone ever squish coins on the tracks ? I used to do it all the time as a kid, I got told that the conductor feel it inside the loco when going over them, I don't know if its true but it must be.
