I have a brother who works for a local council and he got his hands on a sheet of 8 x 4, 3/4" mild steel plate at a good cost (free). Its called a road plate in Ireland, as its used to cover roadwork holes. So it sat on the floor of my workshop for a year. I intended on cleaning it thoroughly and using it as a welding plate. However, this never materialised. So one day over Christmas me and my brother decided to turn it into a workbench. Here is us starting to put legs onto it

After putting all the legs on we realised how heavy this plate actually was. Therefore we added castor wheels on each leg so that we could move it around after it was turned over..The table was then chained to our lifting block and we proceeded in turning the table over

Afternoon Rgillard,
Nice bench ! I can see why you needed the hoist ! ;)

I visited your fine country last May with my little Irish wife Kathleen, its a beautiful country ! I still cant believe how green it is over there !

Good luck with your studies.

Either thats a very happy arrangement of steel or this table is seriously heavy

Got the table lifted up this far and then welded a lifting lug onto its side in order to turn it onto its side

once on its side we welded a lug onto the table top as low as we could and connected the hoist again

Ok, I dont know whether it was the cat or my brother that measured the legs but the only thing this is good for is as a prop in Lord of the Rings. I couldnt believe it when we finally turned it over and it was over a foot too high. We added wheels which made a difference but the table would have been too high anyway
