I have alrady worn out my 14" auger bit, at least the teeth and the point, in about 75 hours of use. I started searching the internet for some replacement carbide teeth and points that would be more durable. It was then that I noticed that the PT augers seem to be a non-standard dimension. They use a 4" pipe shaft while all other brands use either 2 or 2 9/16 inch tubing.

Most points are made for a specific tube diameter. I checked PT's accessories list and did not see teeth or pilot replacements, much less carbide ones. Any one have any suggestions of compatible brands.

My auger has been my most used accessory followed by mower, then forks., bucket, tiller, plow.

What have others' experiences with the augers been? I have generally been happy with mine. It has been up to most anything I could reasonable ask from as little 25 hp PT425 but our soil is pretty rocky with more than a little flint and chert mixed in with the limestone. Watching smoke and sparks coming from the holes is not uncommon.

Give PT a call. They don't list replacement parts on their website. Since the auger teeth bolt on, you should be able to buy a replacement.

Since the augers aren't standard, I would consider taking it to a local welder or carbide tool shop and having them reinforce your auger and face it with some carbide. I would guess that unless you have bent the shaft, you just need a little reworking of the tip and cutting edges.

Along the way, you can caucus with the shop about beefing up the pilot flights to handle your rocks...

Now if you have bent the shaft...I'd consider an adapter to standard augers, but watch the weight to make sure you don't make it too heavy. I'd probably stick to the PT original replacement.

Just my $0.02

I called PT and they did have replacement teeth and pilots for the auger though it took a couple of hours to find the price on the pilot. I went ahead and ordered both because I need them now.

They don't have carbide replacements though. If anyone ever comes across anyone who makes augers with 4 inch shafts I would appreciate their name & address. I expect to be needing replacements again in about 18 months.

what was the price? What does the tip on your auger look like? Mine is made out of maybe 3/8" steel, with a slightlight rounded tip.

I have seen other augers which have a two tine fork like arrangement built into the tip, which looks like a better idea. When the tip of my auger hits a rock, it just stops digging.

Are you saying the shaft hub is 4"? If so then they did build a unique auger!

Most are in the two to three inch range of round *** well as a hex and they all interchange from one make to the other. I would say they GOTCHA! But a good fab guy might be able to reweld a more common auger onto the head.

Most all augers will wear a taper and when yours gets to small on the bottom the you could look at the different options. We had a six inch on a two man rental and the bottom got down to just four inches once before we changed it out.

Art,

I don't know if you know this, but the PT can run augers is the 24 in and 36 in diameter size, and need a large shaft . Those small augers like the Earthquake that Home Depot sells with a 12 in auger, in no way even compares to the PT auger.
