I thought I would post an update. I had been paying a lot more attention to the horse and the owner had been here every day feeding him grain. I was originally worried that this was the problem, combined with the feed quality. I had looked at his hay and it seemed decent quality. He was gaining weight back and looked much better. Until last week. When I got up in the morning last Thursday he was on his side and couldn't get up. He had been there for quite some time. I called the owner who was about half an hour away and got the horse covered to warm him back up. She called the vet, who made it out within a pen hfor our or two. I wasn't down there to hear what they discussed, but it was decided that the horse needed to be put down. It was a very sad ending to this, as I had thought he was improving. Thanks all for your input and help.
