Worried about Jobs

The company I work for, MetLife, has just announced 1,900 job cuts. Out of that 340 are in my area and that's a high percentage.

Sorry to hear about losing your job - it is always a blow.

I'm in Eastern PA and am up in your area talking to Financial Services companies a fair amount. Unfortunately I don't know any of them that are hiring. The rumour is that there is work being contracted out on the quiet though. You may want to approach the managers you know that are still at MetLife and talk to them about this. They may know someone in the organization that is doing this. It's one thing cutting headcount - another getting the job done.

A friend of mine that was let go from Lucent started his own consultancy. Major customer is Lucent - and he makes more now than he did when he was there.

One other point - I also know a couple of people up in NJ who are looking in the financial services IT market. Their experience has been that companies are still interviewing to fill out their HR database - but not necessarily hiring. Another one of the games they play.
