My company agreed to offering me retirement. My immediate management has determined the nature of my work, critical, the last word I heard, they are interested in negotiating a deferred retirement date.

I thought that might happen, and have Plan B ready to go, followed by C,D,E and F.

No plan survives first contact with the enemy.......

So effective some date, yet to be determined, within the next year or two, I am considered - Retired.

Wow, pretty screwed up, eh?

This could be good.

I know my old company had a big difference between "leaving" and "retiring". Retiring was when the company started paying a pension, leaving was when you quit working for them. A person could leave and then "retire" 20 or 30 years later.

It is a date between now and August 2013.

That is if my management and the company don't agree. The company says August 2012. My management does not seem to like that date.

Personally, they need to just let me go.

Many years when my company started to layoff people there was a very good package compared to what is offered today. One young, very good, but extremely arrogant guy I knew tried to get the package. Of course the package was limited and aimed at certain people, aka, mainly old, expensive employees. People with critical skills were not going to get the package. This guy wanted the money because he knew he could get a job somewhere else but he was denied the package. The package denial sparked off his arrogance which led to his being fired and walked out the door that day.:laughing::laughing:

The guy was very smart but his intellect was vastly eclipsed by his arrogance.

Later,
Dan

"The guy was very smart but his intellect was vastly eclipsed by his arrogance."

Kinda reminds me of a guy living in taxpayer provided housing on the East Coast. :)

So contract work is not an option since they offered two years medical I suppose? That to me would be the best of the options, retire with a fixed date, have medical paid for two years, and a contract position possibly for a year. Contractor rates are variable as you probably know based on the type of work.

Sounds like the management want a certain head count and your local mamagement want to retain you, so maybe a contract position would make everyone happy?

Interesting times for sure.

Corporate closed the door on contract work if your retiring for two years. Sort of matches up with the medical benefits.

It's a corporate cost cutting exercise. Local managers have to balance between corporate strategy and direct customer direction. Sometimes, the two are not aligned.

Corporate says I am out the door next week.

I formed my own company and agreed to multiple customer contracts over the coming years.

So, once again, I am a very fortunate person.

Best of luck in your new adventure. I walked out the door January 3rd, 2008 after 37 years and have been so busy since, I don't know when I had time to work....
