Since I can buy from a local distributor, I like my net cost of about $1.25 a tube for nearly any of the top name greases. I get Cat, JD, NH, Lucas, Pennzoil, Kendall etc. for that price. I figure that if the local construction companies, the actual tractor manufacturers and the coal mines use the stuff it can't be that bad. Some of these contractors and the mines get tens of thousands of hours on much of their equipment. Besides, a 40 year master mechanic who is over a large area of Peabody's mine maintenance tells me that if is best to pump out some of the old contaminated grease on most external fittings when greasing. If the old grease has dirt and grit in it, it makes sense to me. I'd just as soon push it out with fresh new grease that is made for, and named as, the manufacturer of my machine.

For my "bulk" use that is pumped by my pneumatic greaser, I use 120 pound quarter barrels that cost me about $100 if I pick them up. If something will last 10,000 hours with what I'm using at that price I'm paying, I'm willing to just risk it. ;) There again, I'm too cheap to pay $9 or $10 a quart for super motor oil either when I haven't been convinced what I use is insufficient in the last 30 years or so. I've noticed that the grease I use has listed molybdenum disulfide on the label for decades. Also, why does "Bob is the Oil Guy" says Schaeffer grease is the best.  Obviously I'm not the right guy for the stuff. "Soundguy" may more of a candidate than me. :D

I'm pretty sure that Bob's has a vested interest in Schaeffer's. They have always been pushing the stuff over there.

My exact thoughts. That's why I said that; sort of tongue in cheek. Other than on BITOG, I've never heard of Shaeffer's. That doesn't mean that it isn't good though. I've just not gone out and had a lot of life experiences with different greases. :)

Snatchface - Yes, I am a Lubricants Consultant for TRC. I get the feeling the 5 and 6 got transposed somewhere along the line when you got the price before. TRC also offers bulk purchase discounts. They start at 1% off at $500 and add 1% off for each additional $300 all the way up to a maximum of 20% off at the $6,200 level (it's kind of directed at commercial/industrial customers who buy in very large quantities).

Sully2 - One of the advantages of using a grease with cohesive/adhesive properties is it's ability to resist being pushed out. It also tends to form a protective barrier on the exterior unlike some others that can ball up and fall off. It's kind of like adding a dust seal and helps to prevent dirt from entering into the lubricated component.

BITOG does have a vested interest in Schaeffer's. He along with many other members are distributors for them.

Dargo - No need to pay $9-10 for a quart of oil. Is that stuff by chance formulated with gold? :) TRC actually has a special running for the month of June. 20% off Moly Pro-Spec III and IV engine oils, DZL-PEP and DZL-LENE fuel additives in any quantity to new customers and existing customers who have never purchased these products before. The Moly Pro-Spec III in a 6 gallon pail works out to about $3.39 per quart and less than that in drum quantities.

I understand totally..but as I said to the OP...using a grease twice as good..but only half the time ( he indicated he "forgets" lubing at times) IS NOT the right game plan.

Regardless of how good it is..or who sells it...over $5 a tube in 50 case lots is outragious! If I were going that route Id buy Chevron Syn..the red stuff...at $7 a tube at the local lube joint...at least they will put on a mask when they rob ya!!

$5, $10 or even $15 a tube isn't bad for grease. Some special application grease can run as high as $180+ per tube.

Are there folks out there interested in splitting a case again?
I'm contemplating buying a case of 50 tubes (and some other TRC products) and am willing to re-sell 20-30 tubes in batches of at least 5 tubes each. Current price is $5.88 per tube (plus shipping).
Please PM me if interested.

Hi All,
It looks like my desire to split a case of this has been satisfied and I probably will not have any extra available.
