I had a 48 farmall cub and the engine oil looked like thick molasses mixed with tar when I got it. I changed it and filter and it got to the point where it looked clean. The engine was fine through it all!
Pull an oil scan on it if you have doubts and buy it if the oil scan shows good.

I wonder what the oil change interval is on a Kubota on a reefer unit?
Yes, yes and yes. I use Blackstone Labs on my stuff. I wouldn't purchase any used tractor without a lab analysis, it would be the best twenty five dollars you ever spent. It will show wear metals in the oil, contaminants present due to bad air filtration and viscosity information on the oil which tells you if it was still capable of doing its job as well as presence of fuel and or water in the crankcase. Glycol in the crankcase is an engine killer.
How do you get enough oil out to do the lab work without giving the guy an oil change? How much oil do you need?
About 2 or 3 ounces is all you pull out of the dipstick hole.
Pull the drain plug and let a little out then stick it back in real quick.
OK, I like the above idea but how do I get 2 or three ounces out of the dipstick hole?.
Thanks for the info.
