i am in a real pickle.

when i bought my land, i dreamed of fencing it --

-- now that i decided new cars are a waste of money, i have someextra cash.

the thing that scares me is post hole digging 240 holes, and getting an aluminum fence up that looks proper.

i have dogs -- lots of them -- so fencing is quite alluring --

-- is it worth it though -- the quality of the jobs, etc? from research, it seems like labor is as much as the materials -- :(

If you do the fence yourself make sure you take your time and do it right (I am sure you will but definitely ask a lot of questions on here). A fence that isn't installed properly can sure detract from your property fast and devalue it and your neighbors property. However, a properly installed fence looks nice and can be worth the investment if you have problems with people bothering you, your property or your pups.

If you look to hire someone to do a fence for you don't just look thru the phone book. Drive around and look for fences that you like then ask the homeowners about their fence, who installed it, anything they wish they did different and any advice they may have for you. Most people are happy to talk about projects they have had done (just don't ask about what it cost them as that isn't generally a proper subject and the price of materials and such has most likely changed a lot since they did theirs).

If I was worried about my dogs I would put a nice fence up in a heart beat. Luckily we have enough land that the dogs know they don't go near the road but can run all over the back of the property.

If you do it yourself, get a marking cable to make it straight and have the posts evenly spaced. Here's where I got mine:

I have a tractor mounted phd but last winter when it was time to dig 30 holes I rented a Dingo. this has hydraulic forward, reverse (if you corkscrew it) and also down pressure. I picked it up, drove 20 min to the house, dug all the holes and had it back in the 2 hr $90 window. well worth it to me. Also set 250 T-posts in under 2 hours using a TLB bucket to push them in. details if you want them. let me know.

Put in big 8x wood corner posts with 'H' brace, and an H brace every 150-200' or so also with 8x posts. put metal t-posts as the line posts, and put up 4x4 field fence. Add a tube gate that has welded wire mesh on it and yuo are good to go. Probably a 2-day job . ( 2x4 fence if they are small dogs... could go welded wire 2x4 that stuff is cheap.. buit not durable as woven 2x4 or 4x4.

I just put up 1500' of fence exactly as Soundguy suggested. The corners poles and line brace poles were done as he said. I went with Red Brand "No Climb" horse fence. This is the 2"x"4 mesh. We wire tied chicken wire on the bottom of the tube gates. Works very well for dogs and horses. I priced having it done. They wanted $2.25 a foot and that was just labor. One thing I did buy that was a lifesaver was a fence unroller/stretcher for the tractor three point. For me stretching is the hardest part and fence not stretched properly looks bad and won't hold up.

I use a farm puller/hi-lift jack pluss the clamp/bar style stretcher to stretch my woven fence.. I use the tractor as an anchor.. I use the manual 'baseball' bat style stretcher for the stranded fence.

Sure is nice to have a second person available when doing all that!

I agree with you on an extra person or two when stretching fence. I'm not familiar with a "baseball" bat style stretcher. Could you please tell me what this is?

Looks like an axe handle.. head area has metal teeth.. about 6" down there is a grab-hook.. slip the wire to be stretched into the hook, and then bit the tteth into the post and then leverage it around.. have another person hammer the staple in..
