Would you pay $1,500 for 14% more HP?

Looking at a TYM T494H versus a T574H. Identical machines except the 574 has a turbo charger, which adds +6.7 engine HP and +6.5 PTO HP. Same hydraulic specs, so the pump is as efficient at 48.3 HP as it is at 55 HP. Hmm.

I’m curious who would value that modest gain in HP (and probably torque gains too). Lots of PTO requirements, I guess?

T574H - $32,500
  • TX 57 Front End Loader (2790# Lift capacity)
  • Hydrostat Transmission (3-Range)
  • 55 hp Turbo Diesel Engine
  • Hitch lift capacity: 3822#
  • PTO: 44.7 hp
T5835 - $35,400
  • BL350 Front End Loader (3,450# Lift capacity)
  • Hydrostat Transmission (3-Range)
  • 58 hp Turbo Diesel Engine
  • Hitch lift capacity: 4400#
  • PTO: 47 hp
I'm going to recommend going a bit higher. I don't think I've read about anyone on this forum regretting going higher HP.

This is a HST machine? If you can use the pto hp for a wider snowblower, mower, tiller, running a round baler, disc bine, its a good idea. Or you're at altitude.
My take with a HST for ground engagement is that you shouldn't run it at much lower than PTO rpm, so the revs are going to be pretty close all the time anyways, and I'd rather have the engine start to strain and let me know I'm finding the limits rather than breaking a front axle trying to lift the whole gravel pile with the loader, or burn out the HST trying to pull the box blade or plow in mid range, because it has the hp for it.

Is anything else on the drive train or cooling system up graded with the extra HP?
My tractor was the same machine for 40-45-50hp versions except the 50hp got an an engine oil cooler. The HST, axles, hydraulic fluid cooler, rads, were all the same, so I figured the 40hp would be easier on the whole tractor, and I'm not going to wear out the motor in the 3-4000 hours I'm ever going to put on in 30-40 years.... All 3 engines would run basically the same rpms anyways.
For a geared machine, I think the turbo's and extra hp is better and if your can't downshift on the move, the turbo is great for just adding more torque if you need it, and you can run lower rpms if you want, the trans doesn't care unless your really lug it.
Dealer told me it’s just the turbo. I saw from the specs the pump is the same - the pump is as hydraulically efficient at 48.3HP as it is at 55HP.

So, I really think what I’m buying here is additional torque, which is absent from what is published.

Why do all the spec sheets and the discussions on tractor capability center around HP and not torque? When, it seems to me like most of the mechanical purpose of a tractor is about torque…?

I’m just a classroom aggie right now, but that part of y’all’s industry makes me scratch my chin. 🤔

I thought the 5835 is a little big for an HST, so I looked it up and the 5835 doesn't have an HST, its a synchromesh power shuttle. Maybe will work for the OP, but I recommend trying it first to see how it works for the typical things you want to do. I know I prefer the HST for the amount of careful tight loader work I do.

Gosh, thanks for looking that up - this model came out of nowhere for me! This TYM lineup is ripe for some pruning - very confusing with their heritage models and Branson models. More internet work today, it seems…

Dealer out this way currently asking $29,750 for the T574H - sales and rebates going on now, I guess.

I gotta make a move fast now with the Fed cutting the rate - I fear it will make these sales evaporate!

Yes, I’m going HST for my first tractor… sorry gearheads!

Fair enough, but in your power range, you Might want to try/consider/look at Power Shuttle transmissions too. I think the larger TYMs, and the Massey M series ofter them

Tough call...
I shopped the L60 series 8 years ago, and quickly determined that I had to draw the line somewhere. I ended up with the L4060 because it was a similar weight (very slightly less than the 4760-6060) and that it shares the same basic engine as the higher HP models.
The only time I can run out of HP is grinding stumps, but a dense stump will anchor any one of the L60 tractors if you go too fast.
Thanks for this. Before I saw the price differences and discovered that TYM Kukje motor, I was dead set on the Kubota L4060. I’m also thinking now a PTO chipper shredder would be even more useful for me than the grinder.

This is the Old Days, but a Turbo Tractors often are Under Rated on a Dyno.

I recall Clocking 6610's right at 78hp (Rated) Dyno'd and 7710's would do 91-93 PTO Dyno'd (Rated @86hp)

The same 4.4L 4 Cylinder, Naturally Asp/Turbo.

@ $1500 would you really want to go through the next 20 years or so "Wishing you Would Have?"

No one has ever looked back and said: "I'm glad I bought the lower horsepower tractor!".
