So if it gets ripped out what about putting in aluminum decking. It will make the space under it dry, since the aluminum decking has channels.
what is he going to do with the space looks like a good root cellar.

It’s a covered porch so such an expensive deck isn’t needed. The water is coming from below.

Re: Would you touch this with a 10 foot pole? Wood floor in a job that IMO should be

I haven稚 calculated the load rating of the joist. Considering the concrete didn稚 break and the joist didn稚 sag during the pour maybe they didn稚 do awful in that aspect. The biggest flaw was they didn稚 have any other support for the concrete and they used a product not meant for wet location in a wet location. If the concrete had any means of support that didn稚 rot away it probably wouldn稚 have fallen in. View attachment 587336View attachment 587337

That's about ready to collapse. He has no choice but to rip the slab out and replace them. Best option would be to fill in the cavity and then repour the slab.

Exactly what I think, but he wants a wood floor. Here’s an office I did that had a concrete floor. That’s a vinyl flooring product that’s water proof and approved for direct contact with concrete. Maybe he’d go for that. I’m guessing it would cost close to $1500 to fill in the hole so I need to look into better methods of supporting the concrete while leaving it hollow. IMG_1222.JPG

We had pan decking like that put in under the porch at my parents place in the 1990s, then we put a 6" slab on it (it covers a alcove in the basement and is a "porch" for the door. It still looks great.

My father built a bomb shelter in our house in the 50's. He used cribbing and plywood with plastic sheeting over the plywood. Then he laid out the rebar and had it poured. After it cured, removed the wood cribbing and plastic sheeting. Kinda funny, the Russians never bombed us (yet) but we used it for tornado shelter many, many times. While hiding down there during storms, we'd play "How many leaves can you find?" Apparently it was fall when he laid down the plastic, and some leaves fell onto it before the concrete pour. A couple dozen left imprints in the concrete ceiling of the bomb shelter and we'd look for them to pass the time while waiting for the storms to pass. I hadn't thought of that for years now. :)

We have many buildings built that way where I work. Many new ones doing that, too.

Then use 2xX joists with treated plywood. I'd highly recommend paying the upgrade for .60 CCA foundation grade treated. That stuff will last the life of the house.
