Please keep this post updated. I am very curious to see what options I might have when the time comes for me. I to am wanting to build a trailer.

Thanks

Out of curiosity, I stopped by the line-x dealer today and he quoted me $300 to do the trailer frame to .080 thick.

A local Line X place quoted me 5 times that much to do an 18' trailer. :confused2:

Was that including the deck top and bottom? I told this guy I would bring him the bare frame with no deck boards.

Still don't have the price on the metal. The guy works third shift and hasn't had time to contact his supplier yet.

I am tearing apart a wrecked Bison 2 horse trailer. It's scary seeing how it was built:( The structural welds look good but the structure itself worries me! The main frame was only 3/16" angle iron welded onto the 6x2 channel tongue. No bracing. I'm sure it only worked because the horses had to stand balanced over the axles. There was a lot of flex in it when I got down to the frame.

The other thing is that the sheet metal welded onto the frame trapped water behind it and there was a lot of rust on it.

Of course a good weld is when it's stronger than the frame. By this definition, the welds were good enough.... :(

I just finalize a buy on a used trailer. I was looking of something larger and about all I could find was small ones. Have you searched on Craigslist for used trailers. You can find those sizes by the dozens that are almost new to very old in all kinds of price ranges. Most of the older ones havent been used much and at most will require some new boards and maybe a repack of the bearings just to be on the safe side.

Here is new one from a dealer for $1129 two wheel version that is 6'4" x 12 from just a down and dirty search locally. I did find that some areas wont have a single trailer for sale when another one will have 50 or more and the city search will be approx. same size. Weird to say the least. If you search Utility trailer you will narrow it down a lot.

Brother in law wanted his Gator bed coated and LineX quoted $500, so he asked them about coating the floor board area while they were at it. Same price because it would take more than 1 unit to coat the box so they didnt charge any more to do the other part. So I asked about my 5.5" truck bed, $500. I cant believe the material is that expensive and it was pretty thin on the Gator so when I looked at it, I decided against getting my truck bed done. I will check around to some other place first.

I got the price for the metal. Looks like the frame without running gear will cost me about $600 including the 7K coupler. Adding in the other stuff will turn that into probably 12-1400. Not as bad as I thought.
