I have an X495, with 45 loader and I'd just like to check the proper operation of the lockout valve. To my mind, it's not functioning as it should.

When screwed in to use the loader, the operation of the rockshaft is not prevented entirely. It is slowed somewhat, but the rear implement will still raise and lower with the crowding of the bucket. Is this normal? I would have though "lock-out" would do exactly that - totally prevent any movement of the rockshaft while the loader was in operation.

I had the same issue with my old X485 with the 45 loader, but I started with an aftermarket lockout valve that was a quarter turn valve. Just like you, the 3PH would move slowly. Got so aggravating that I went and bought the JD version which as I recall is a screw-in/out type valve and that worked much better. Is your valve quarter turn or the screw-in/out type?

Well, I can only guess the valve is bad and leaking. Maybe a piece of Teflon tape or crud is in the way. Might be worth removing it and cleaning up as best you can then re-installing it. Don't recall if it uses o-rings, but if so, try replacing them. If that doesn't work, might have to try a new one. I assume, being you have a X495 that it's out of warranty? When I bought my X485 used, it didn't have the lock out valve even though it was suppose to be standard on that model IIRC, so I bought the aftermarket version to start.

Problem sorted - it was a failure of John Deere to advise the proper method of using the valve. A DTAC solution was issued in July 2002 about the proper operation of the valve, which advises that all subsequent operator manuals would be revised. My manual, from my 2007 machine says nothing about the correct operation of the valve though. It fails to mention that the rear hydraulic cylinder must be completely retracted before the valve is shut. Probably common knowledge to some, but not to those who's manual says nothing about it.
