X300 won't back up

Hi All,

I have a 5 year old x300 that just started refusing to back up - - or backs up very slowly. Runs fine in forward. Looked in operator's manual and they only suggest seeing the dealer - - not what I was looking for.

Anybody had a similar experience? I'm guessing that the forward / reverse pedals have an interconnect, but looking for suggestions. Thanks.

This sounds like a pedal linkage adjustment issue. The lever on the transmission moves in one direction with the forward pedal, it moves the opposite way in reverse. You should be able to see if the reverse pedal is moving the lever enough, or at all.

You may also be able to reverse the tractor by pulling the forward pedal backwards. If that works, it is the linkage. There is probably something loose, and is not moving the hydrostatic control valve to the reverse position.

Worst case - Tranny is going out.

Just out of curiosity, how many hours on your X300. And can it climb a hill?

I have about 300 hundred hours on it. It climbs hills fine - - runs great going forward. I tried adjusting the linkage, and completely understand the relationship between forward and reverse pedals. Can't seem to adjust out the slack in the reverse pedal, so it runs out of travel before it engages the trans.

I'm sure you have fixed this by now, but I had a similar problem on my x530 and made this video John Deere X530 - Slow or No Reverse Fix - YouTube to show how I fixed it. Yours may be similar and as easy and cheap!
