x500 or x534 your preferrence?

I'm looking at getting a jd tractor that can rototill / blow snow within the next two years. Is the cornering / steering that much of a difference between the x500 and the x534?

I'm not sure about the steering difference but if you are considering a snow blower I would go with a model with hydraulic lift. I have the X530 and the hydraulic lift for the heavy blower is nice. I think I read that the X500 with the blower is fairly heavy on the mechanical foot lift. There is a spring assist that makes it a little easier but that is an option. Also I thought I read that you can't put chains on the 4 wheel steer model. Not sure about that. Maybe someone else can confirm.

I know this seems weird but if you own a 4ws tractor you can see how this works. Having 4ws moves the pivot point from the rear wheels to the center of the tractor. When this happens, the radius of the circle moves as well! When it moves to the center of the tractor, it then will include the width of the deck that will stick into the circle if you will, and significantly decrease your cutting radius.

No. The X500 and X530 have an identical turning radius of 22".

You can put chains on the x534, I bought a set from the dealer when I bought my x534, just have to reposition the stops on the rears (very easy) to prevent the chains from hitting at full left or right turn. The 47 inch blower is heavy, the hydraulic lift is almost a necessity. i dont know what rototiller attachments are available for the x5xx series, i'm not sure but i don't believe any have a rear pto or 3pt lift like the x7xx series have. It's not something I was looking for in a lawn tractor when I bought mine so can't say. I am glad to have the hydraulic lift but wish it had a little more range (higher lift) for the snow blower, full up is barely 4 inches off the ground. But for all the times I have to raise and lower during a typical session, I wouldn't be without it. The hydraulic steering is great also.

I wish the x534 was available with a liquid cooled engine.

Don't waste your money on the JD soft enclosure for winter time, its a PITA to install and does a poor job of closing you in. It's almost like some junk aftermarket enclosure that JD put their name on and bumped the price up x2. You can do much better from third party manufacturers. I didn't use mine the first two winters, this past winter I decided to try it out and if I had just bought it I would have taken it back, its that bad. But 3 years after the sale that wasn't going to happen.

If you get the snow blower make sure you get at least two 42# weights and/or wheel weights, you'll need them to offset the weight of the blower else you will have reduced rear traction.

I would believe the specs on the JD website before I would believe the psecs on that site I think. Yes, 27" turning radius is correct for the x534 and the x500 turning radius is less(22").

But turning radius and uncut radius are two different things. the x534 with a 54" deck has an uncut radius of 14" IIRC, how does that compare to the x500 ?

I think the limit of the lift (approx. 4") is limited to how much of an angle the belt can take before being thrown off not the hydraulic stroke.

The soft cab was changed a year or so ago to a full 4 sided enclosure with a hinged door. The previous model was 3 sided (open in the back) and you had to climb in under the side flap if I remember correctly. The new cab still takes some time to install however I wouldn't be without it.
