All right......

So my next question is after you buy the unit is the programming free??

/ XM Satlite Radio on Jojn Deere 2210 #12
Nope, programming is $9.99 a month, but going up to $12.99 if you don't lock in the lower rate with a pre-pay plan.

The equipment varies in price, but ranges between $80 and $150 for typical XM units.

But the folks I know who use IPODS and other assorted MP3 players average about $15.00 per month in music purchases (either by download fees or by buying CDs at the store). Now I do know folks who "rip" music, but as that is not legal, I won't compare the price to that, but even those people tend to buy at least some of their music, I'd bet the prices are pretty even overall.

MP3 players run from about $99 to about $400, depending on storage capacity, features, etc.

SteveZ,

I have looked at the enclosure for marine use and will order it soon, will it mount similar to how I have it mounted now, and how do the wires (power, signal & headphones get in the enclosure? I will also get the hardwire acc. offered on xmfanstore.com, or take apart the cig. adapter and modify it for hardwire use.

Bob,

The headphones I'm using now have a volume control and work quite well. But I to want to get away from the wires. I have to do this one step at a time; I will be looking at that options soon. I would like to use Bluetooth and fix it to also handle my cell phone. Of course you know where this is going...how I will mount the laptop for email and internet; thank god the tractor came with a cup holder!

The JVC HANC100 Noise Canceling Headphones arrived yesterday, they work great, but I still have the problem with the wire. I hope I can use these with some type of wireless setup, if you have suggestions please post!

You want to try one of the new units with the FM MOD built in like the MYFI. I have the MYFI and use a FM Headset Receiver I just tune to the same FM Freq. that the MYFI is braodcasting on. With this setup NO wires. Also since the MYFI will run for up to 5 hours off it own battery no electric hookup.

That's like replacing a battery daily. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Can it still be hooked up to the 12 volt circuit or implemented with rechargeable batteries?

Mike,

The MiFi is rechargable if I understand it correctly. It is a "personal" XM style radio, very similar to the Apple iPod MP3 players.

The older SkyFi and its replacement the SkyFi2 use a docking station, those access the vehicle's 12 volt power by wiring the docking station to the vehicle. The head unit can be moved from vehicle to vehicle.

The ROADY is similar to the SkyFi/SkyFi2 but with less features. However, it has an available portable power pack so it can be used like a MiFi, or it can be vehicle powered like a SkyFi/SkyFi2. I don't know if the ROADY has rechargable batteries in the optional portable power pack.

The main reason I have not put a SkyFi base station on a tractor is that I can't find a sound deadening wireless ear muff type radio that will also let me wear a hat for sun protection! I'd like to wear both a wide brim hat and sound deadening muffs. They seem to be mutually exclusive to each other. I like my SkyFi2, I have a base station in my office, 2 of my cars (but not the lovely Mrs_Bob's car) and I bought a base for the Snow Trac too . . . but I just can't figure out how to put it on the tractors and work the way I want it to.

Thanks for the response Bob.

Gotta admit, when I first saw this thread I though yeah right. how practical can this idea be...

Now I'm starting to reconsider the idea altogether.

I would assume that these little receivers are resistant to the types of vibration involved with a tractor?

Do they require any special antenna considerations?

RE: VIBRATIONS . . . Are they designed for tractor vibrations? Heck I dunno! I sell candy to kids, I know squat about electronics! But they are designed for cars and boats. If I mount one, I doubt I would mount it on the hood (but I am interested to see how Greg's will hold up mounted on the hood), I'd proably do a fender mount to eliminate some of the vibration. Maybe mount it next to the TNT valve I added? Like I said, I've thought about it, but not decided if I will do it.

RE: ANTENNAS . . . Only speaking for the SkyFi2, because I have several of those "car kits" they have a small magnetic mount antenna that will easily adhear to the ROPS (with no drilling or welding /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) The antenna plugs into the docking station, it is very small & low profile. I have a permanent mount antenna on one of my convertibles and that antenna is much larger (about the size of a pack of cigarettes) the new ones are 1/4 the size.

I enjoyed my XM last year in my shop, on my tractor and in my truck. For the tractor application the only skip is around a lot of trees or overhead cover. There is a volume adjust from the XM menu for standard headphones or the cheapo e-bay noise canceling headphones have a volume adjust and require a AA battery. The standard magnetic antenna is all you need. I do a lot of mowing in the summer and enjoy the XM immensly!
