I am loking to purchase the Xuv.

The winch attachment for the xuv seems to stick out very far in front of the unit. Are you guys getting hung up on your winch when you go in and out of ditchs?

When I put the Woren Bumper on my 4 wheeler it actualy took away from my performance because of the extension of the noise. I do bottom out on the bumper now, and off roading clearance has been reduced in and out of ditchs.

Does the winch reduce performance? ( I know it is cool to look at)

i have an hpx and i take my winch off because of that fact . when riding in and out of ditches it will tend to hangup on the incline or the bottom of the ditch when your going doin into it. so when i ride i just unpin it and put it in the box in the bed. but for most normal riding it stays mounted to the front.

it ain't so cool when you can't use your winch to pull your self out because it's burried in the mud underneath 1300lbs of gator .lol . i think it would be better to just keep it in the back when doin that kind of riding like you say they do look cool but they will plow into a ditch bank or bottom.

you might not wanna ride around with the trailer hitch in the rear reciever too. thats a good way to get stuck. it got me and my son stuck one day in the canefield . it left us sitting high and dry.lol so now when i go mud ridine the winch and trailer hitch come out.

I've ridden around with a ball in the back of mine and had it drag going up a steep incline next to my driveway. Wouldn't want to put a winch through the same.

I've sort of wondered what I would do with a winch also. I haven't gotten one yet but if I left it on the front I'm afraid it will get dirty, hit by trees, and generally just banged up. Now if I take it off what am I going to do with it ? I got those pouches but I don't think I can fit a winch in one of those... Leaving it in the bed is not an option as it would be destroyed in a matter of days. I wish I could leave it on the front, there's something about seeing a winch on the front that I like...

Sticky: I can't answer you now, but I will next week. I have ordered a Warn RT30 winch for my XUV and a mounting plate that sticks out very little. Some mounting plates have the front of the winch as much as 10-12" from the hitch receiver tube. That is way too far.

I can see a winch decreasing the approach angle a little, but you would have to be in some very steep approach ditches for it to hit. The XUV sits higher than a HPX or similar UTV.

I will post pix next week.

it really don't have to be a steep aproach you could drop into a small ditch and if it's too deep and your front tires sink the winch will get hungup on the otherside .it's best not to ride with it out .
my winch dug in when i had my lift kit in thats with 2" lift kit and 27"tires on the front to so it was just as high as the xuv is. i sinse then took the lift kit out. my winch doesn't stickout that far it is right up against the bumper . as for the winch storage get a box from walmart for 30.00 and keep it in there or go to lowes they have a few more to choose from .

For the XUV do you have to buy the winch from JD or can you just buy the Warn winch directly. What about the electrical connections?

I have an HPX but I saved (at the time) close to $200 by buying the winch myself (not JD's set-up). All required connections came with the winch and I did not need to buy anything from JD. I mounted a seperate switch which came with the winch in the dash. Now my winch is a Ramsey not Warn but it has worked great with no problems. :)

Here are some pix of my winch mounting plate before and after cutting it shorter. The final installation is very short. You can see that the back of the winch is only a few inches from the bumper. The pix with the tape measure hanging has the front hook along the grill screen, which is several inches behind the bumper. The first three are before shortening and the last three afterwards.

You would have to be attempting to start up a 70 degree hill for this to be in the way.
