Wouldnt you know... I just signed up yesterday, and today my baby suffered a power loss... an extreme one. I was using the FEL to shuttle 5/8 minus from the pile to the work site, about 1 acre away, when, with an empty bucket, in High range, 1st gear about 2200rpm, the engine suddenly started making a different sound, sorta like a loud popping, and the engine started loosing power. the exhaust would puff black smoke, but not alot of it, nor consistant. I shut-er down, but couldnt "see" anything obvious, so I tried a restart (before it cooled off too much). Hard to start, VERY low power and some black smoke in the exhaust. Power was so low, that at wide open throttle, it could barely limp back to the "barn".
What do I check for? Or do I just go find a mechanic?

You might also want to check to see that there isn't something in the air intake that is blocking the air to it. Or the muffler for that matter to.

Ditto on fuel. When our deisel trucks at work start pumpin black smoke and missing.. it is almost always fuel filter.. or bad fuel / water /gunk in the lines.

good luck

If that doesn't help, let us know.

Woodlandrjs:

It looks as if I'm a little late here but, when my little Yanmar did the same thing is was the fuel filter plugged with green gunk.

Changed the filter and cleaned out the bowl and it purred like a kitten. Also had to Drain the tank being the tractor was stored outside and some water had gotten into the tank.

THANK YOU ALL for the suggestions!!!
Well... the fuel filter check sounded very good. Before I did that, I decided to check a few more mechanical "things". I noticed that on this 2 cylinder, the aft "compression relief" didnt do a thing... no resistance to moving the lever. I pulled the valve cover and found the rear intake valve rocker arm laying in the oil on top of the head and the push rod was missing. The "machined boss" on the support tower that provides the surface for the rocker arm and rocker arm bearing to ride on and attach to has broken off of the support tower. This was not allowing the valve to open, thus no intake air for that cylinder. I now need to open the crank shaft cover to retrieve the remains of the push rod and check for further damage. The other "boss" for the exhaust valve on this support tower looks O.K., but the support tower will have to be replaced, plus a new push rod, gaskets, etc.
Question... where do I go to get parts for this little jewel?

Yep, A rorcker arm laying on the head will definately cause a little problem. I just wonder what happened to the pushrod?

Has to be in the crank case. I'll open it later today.
Still looking for a place to get parts.
Thanks for the reply.

Several grey market dealers frequent this forum, so I'm sure one will be able to help you if you want.
