To all

Sorry I didn't get back here sooner. I started to post this AM, but had to quit. The rain stopped and I had work to do. It rained last nite and this AM...it was a blessing!! Yesterday, the dust was so bad I had to wear a mask. So I spent today spreading more loam...it was dust free too /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I plan to seed this area this Sunday.

I appreciate the suggestion you guys offered about putting down rye, but I should be OK. I am using a mix of bluegrass and fescue. The day temps around here are still about 65-70. Yesterday, it hit 74 at my place. So I'm still in good shape as far as getting the seed to germinate.

Take a look at the pic I attached. This is the other half of my 2.5 acre lawn. I did the same thing there as I am doing to this side. Plowed it under, regraded and raked the daylights out of it to clean it up. I also added about 500 yds...yep you read it right...500 cubic yds of screened loam! Note, this is the total amount for the whole yard, not the side I'm working on now. Only added 12 triaxle loads to this side.

Anyway, the area in the pic was planted the last week in OCT 2002, and as you can see, it looks great. One reason I wanted to plant as late as possible was the water requirements. After I cover the seed bed with straw, I'll only have to water it for a short time. Then winter will do the rest. Believe me, it works!! As long as the seed germinates before the first killing frost, the grass will be fine and it will be a beautiful lawn next spring. Maybe some day, I'll put in a sprinkler system.

Where are the rocks?
Right here...and many more loads too /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Screened loam around here is about the same, $18-22. I only paid $14-16 yd. I've given my earth guy a lot of biz, so he takes care of me.

and a few more. Most of the rocks on the end, were 'harvested' from my yard.

Nice view! Bet you get hammered by the wind alot!!
Those white caps look like a rough ride too.

I live on a hill above a valley. Sometimes, I swear this is ocean front property...minus the ocean! The wind can be so brutal at times. I've learned that when a strong storm is forecast, I have to bolt everything down...literally!!!

By any chance are you an arborist?

I just finished looking at all your attachments showing your unbelieveable lawn..... I actually heard squeals of delight from my front yard that is currently home to a very large colony of MOLES /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. They'd love to sink their teeth into that nice peice. Do you have any problems with them, and if so, what have you done? You've done a beautiful job.

As far as storms, one of the worst we had was back in 1991. Our place is on a 50ft. bank and the house is back about 125 ft. By the time it was done, you couldn't see out our windows. They looked like they had been covered with wax paper. The whole house was covered with salt. That storm had winds in excess of 100mph. I guess that's nothing special for our friends in Florida, but there was one difference. It was about 15 degrees out when this took place.

Coming from Sunny California, where it dos not rain all summer, I have to ask... What do you do with all that lawn /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It really looks pretty, but looks like work too.

Do you depend on rain for water, or is it irrigated too? My little old well would not support even a fraction of that area. It is so dry out here from June till November, that the only way a lawn can be done is with lots of irrigation.

It does look really pretty though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It would be great justification for a shined up Farmall-A with a 5' woods belly mower in the tractor collection /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

TBAR, I got to see one of Lubbock's dust storms that I think was even worse than that picture in the summer of 1994.
