I have a 2004 Yamaha 660 Rhino UTV with a winch, snow plow, aftermarket lights, wheels and tires and sound system. I bought it from a retired fellow that said it just quit running while he was driving down the road. He did not have it long but bought it from a State that did not issue a title. I got a bill of sale. Clean machine with 700 hours. It would crank and try to start but did not.
Brought it to my mechanic and he got it to run badly. Found metal in the engine oil etc. Anyways to repair the same with my engine etc. sent out to be remanufactured and sent back with everything and labor would be $7000. Guessing I will sell it as is or part it out. Took a chance on it, once bought a Kawasaki Mule not running and turned out to be an intake issue and only took $200 to fix it. Does not always work out the way one would hope.
I know UTV prices are up but parts are harder to get for that old of machine and just not worth it IMO. As I did not get to use it before purchase could be other issues I am not aware of. I think the votes here will be to abandon any fix.

Where are you located and how much would you like for it? I would be interested in it.

Dang. That sounds expensive. What’s the labor rate?

I recently learned that Harley Davidson mechanics/technicians get paid almost double what your typical big brand automotive dealership mechanic/technician gets paid. Pretty surprising, at least to me.

I'm assuming that the shop is estimating the repair high to cover an engine core charge if it is damaged too bad. Also, if the mechanic notices other things like the CDI issue and clutch problems etc, you have a good estimate of enough repairs that will ensure a dependable machine. It's better doing that than to give you a $4500 engine job and the rest of it is junk.

I live in western Ohio between Lima and Dayton. Unsure if that is anywhere near you.

We have had 2 660 carb'ed and 1 700 efi and all were fantastic and virtually bullet proof. The 660's needed after market priming bulbs though or would be difficult to start after sitting more than a week or two.

In Canada a replacement 660 crate motor runs about $4,000.

FWIW: Maybe a little more looking around and you may find a drop in crate motor makes it cost effective?

some have reported a small run of Rhinos had a bad ring problem. hopefully something simple like this. ??

I have a yammy 540cc two cylinder two stroke looking for such a transplant...

Try looking for an older sled end of season as a motor donor might be a cheaper alternative
