When i switched from a 35hp evinrude to a 55 hp evinrude my fuel consumption went down because I was able to back the larger motor off considerable after getting on step. that said I would look at props first not only decreasing pitch but also switch to stainless or better yet a higher end stainless for even better performance. Iboats.com has the best prop prices and selection that I have been able to find.
I have a 2002 Suzuki DF70 4 stroke on a 16.5 ft center console.
Been a great motor so far, came with a 6 year warranty which helped me decide to go with it.
One warranty repair, power tilt/trim unit.
Have one of the tilt/trim relays not making contact all the time, need to replace it, out of warranty.
Be advised, not familiar with others parts prices but Suzuki marine parts are outrageously expensive:shocked:

Less pitch more diameter on the wheel. This will reduce your top end speed but give you more power out of the hole. See your dealer, probably a couple inches less in pitch.
I've owned a bunch of Merc engines and have found them to be totally reliable. I have a 15 hp Mariner (Merc) on my duck boat and no matter how cold it is it's starts on 2 or 3 pulls.
Put 1400 hours on a pair of 330s with out a hitch. Ran that boat from Boca to Freeport without a worry.

I am in the marine industry and have never seen a foil do much good. Tabs would help but the cheapest is a prop.
What is your RPM at Wide Open Throttle. If you do not have a tach have a tech hook up a scan tool to see what it is. You will gain about 300 rpm going down one size.
Say your motor is rated at 5,000 RPM at WOT and you are only turning 4,600 RPM then you need to step down a pitch. Say you have a 19 pitch on it now get a 17 pitch.
As far as motors go I would not touch anything but a Suzuki, Yamaha, and a Honda in that order.
Problem is if you have a Merc now its going to be the cheapest route to go with Merc again initially. Controls, wiring, gauges, should or may all work again. Over the long run though I have found Merc to cost the most.

I have a Honda on my duck hunting boat and I wouldn't buy anything else. While having a problem with your motor on the lake while fishing sucks it's nothing compared to having motor problems out on the lake when the weather is below 0. My Honda is the only engine to never let me down out of all I've owned.
A friend has a Yammy and it's worked fine for him (I've never owned one).
