But if you are concerned with countries -- only cities in Canada and the USA have Major League teams.

Yeah, and now Canada only has one team, now that the Montreal Expos are moving to Washington. I assume the team will be renamed as the Washington Senators? Ironically, the last major league baseball team to move to another city was the Washington Senators...

The first Washington Senators team moved to Minnesota in 1960 and renamed as the Twins. A year later, a new expansion team was created in Washington, and that team was also called the Senators. They moved to Texas in 1971, becoming the Texas Rangers.

I "heard" that the Rangers still own the rights to the name Senators. That info could be wrong though. Anybody Know?

I don't know. I assumed the team would be renamed the Washington Senators, but after a Google search, I came up empty-handed with information about a possible name change. It makes sense though, the last two MLB teams to move to new cities had their names changed to suit the cities where they moved to...

Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers
Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Brewers

NBA teams haven't faired so well...
Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles (Lakes in L.A.???)
New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah (Jazz in Utah???)

Re: Yankee\'s - Red Sox

Well, it's now 2-0 Red Sox heading to St. Louis for three in a row. That Cardinal lineup is incredible so I'm sure not claiming sweep or even victory yet. In the two games thus far I never felt any lead was 'safe' and see no reason it will change. I am, of course, still rooting for my beloved Red Sox. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since the subject of team names and franchise moves has been broached, here's a question on that topic for you:

Where is the NBA franchise today that won eleven championships in thirteen seasons years ago? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Yankee\'s - Red Sox

I'm not a particularly rabid baseball fan, but must admit there's been some fine playing lately. Not fine enough to keep me up late at night watching, but I can't say that about my co-workers. Some of them have become absolute zombies due to late night extracurricular activities! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Yankee\'s - Red Sox

IF a real big IF Boston wins, will the city have to pay the price of a night of out of control crowds burning cars and breaking store front windows? It was a shame that a 21 year old kid had to die because the Red Socks won. Will this put an end to those Red Socks fans whining about never winning, I think not! Yankees still have 26 World Series Titles, Boston 1 perhaps 2?? Only time will tell, it is not over yet, the curse may still live!!!

It was alcohol and an unruly drunk crowd of 60,000 + people that had already starting flipping cars over and lighting at least one on fire that caused that young lady to die. Add to that a police officer that didn't know how to use his less lethal weapon and you spell disaster. I blame the unruly crowd for her death.

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif She didn't have to die, nor did the Sox winning the pennant cause her death. Because one event follows another doesn't imply the first caused the second. Could be an interesting legal defense, though. The Red Sox are at fault. On the other hand, the Yankees could be blamed since they lost. Wait a minute. Rivera could be blamed because he pitched badly. Nope, it's Ortiz's fault since he hit home runs. Check that, it's Schilling's fault since he pitched so well. Darn, wrong again. It's the doctor's fault, who operated on Schilling, which allowed him to pitch well. Yep, that's the cause. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I blame the unruly crowd for her death.
To blame is defined as 'to hold responsible', and a crowd can not be held responsible. Since the cause of her death is already agreed upon, the courts will determine the level of responsibility. One side will argue that she assumed some of the responsibility by being there, i.e., knowing what might happen at such a gathering, while the other will argue she was just standing there minding her own business, the officer wasn't properly trained or didn't follow procedures, etc.

Sports might be too broad. Perhaps just no posts about sports as religion? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Yankee\'s - Red Sox

Why so bitter to be a Yankee fan?

Losing to anyone else but Boston is acceptable. When the teams go into the offseason they don't do anything else but look at what it takes to beat Boston. Schilling is there because of the Yankee's. The Evil Empire, Jose Conteras and on and on it goes.

What makes sports so different is that in the am after it's over life goes on with nothing more than a broken heart. Politics do affect your life when clowns make laws which change your life and how you live it.
