I will offer you some tips. This was the first engine that I ever rebuilt. If you don't have the shop manual get one. Study the manual carefully..several times. If you are in Nashville, I know of a 20+ year experience bobcat diesel mechanic who has restore a few JD Yanmar tractors in the past five years. He tried working on my JD850, but it was just too far gone. If the head is cracked badly, that's the death sentence right there to rebuild. It takes 1-week for total tear down and machine shop inspection. Then 1-week putting it all back together. I also have the JD850/950 service manuals. Thus getting the YM2610 with the same engine made so much sense.

The closest Yanmar place to service the 1610D would be out of TX or AL.

@SaliorBob, Fredricks is just a little hop up the road from you. They could have rebuilt the YM1700 easily. However, look at the experience you gained just doing it.
