Hi,

I don't know. How sensitive is it anyone?

I'm just trying not to exacerbate a discrepancy of the ties that are on already have one.

Does anyone know what the tolerances are for something like this?

I still haven't done or but I'm planning on just found the 100 rotations to work it out. Been building a new house for the tractor though so haven't had a chance yet.

Cheers.

I think if you are using the tractor on low traction surfaces, the accuracy may not be that critical. Although you may cause a bit more ground damage. Problems will arise if it's wrong and you are running on Tarmac or concrete through winding the transmission up. But you wouldn't have it in 4wd on those surfaces anyway.

That was a long winded way of saying, if you only use the 4wd on the slippery stuff, counting 100 rotations will be more than good enough in my view.

If it does not lock up now, measuring circumferences will work just fine.

OK, so some more advice needed.

I currently have

Front - 5.00 - 14 Farmservice Lug - Circumference 1904mm
Rear - 8.3 - 22 R1 Agricultural DRC 12 PR - Circumference 2943mm
Measured using a soft tape measure.
Circumference Ratio = 1.545

Hoye sell Turf Kits which I can't buy but am trying to replicate and they suggested getting...
Front - Carlisle or Denman - 23 - 10.50 - 12 - Circumference 1697mm
Rear - Maxxis or Kelly 315 - 75 - 16 - Circumference 2761.15
Circumference Ratio = 1.627

Today I jacked up the tractor and ran it for 100 rear revolutions and counted the front, I did this twice.
Rear 100 revolutions - Front = 137 revolutions. Second count was 140 revolutions but I think I miscounted the second time not the first. Very sure.

So that would mean that for 100 revolutions on the rear with the current tyres the travelled distance would be....
Rear - 294.3 Metres
Front - 260.84 Metres

For the Hoye suggested Turf Kit......
Rear - 276.11 Metres
Front - 232.48 Metres

I thought the front was supposed to travel more distance?

Why the disparity?

Have I made any mistakes?

Am I worrying too much and it doesn't make much difference?

Is there something wrong with my Tractor?

All help much appreciated.

Cheers from Sunny England.

From what I've read here, ideal is that front leads back slightly, up to 5%. This makes sense because in turns the front travels a greater distance than the back.

We need a real design engineer to resolve actual ideal practice.

Aaron from Hoye kindly replied to my thread via a Hoye helpdesk ticket and has allowed me to copy into here for anyone needing help.

"... Am I worrying too much and it doesn't make much difference? .."

Yes.

It is not an exact science... it can't be exact because you have tire wear to contend with.... especially on big lug tires where the tire wear on the rear can alter the diameter by 6" or more. Air pressure and load will alter that even more.

Small variations in the ratio do not really matter because:

1)- you are only engaging the 4wd on a slippery surface where the difference in wheel travel can be absorbed by the slipping tires or soft ground.

2)- you are going slow

If you were driving on asphalt in 4wd you would have problems (even with the factory tires). If you were going 50mph you would also have problems. You are not. You are fine. Your measurements are correct. It will work. I guarantee it or your money back :)

Thanks,
Aaron

A big thanks to Aaron and Hoye as they couldn't sell them to me so stood to gain nothing but gave me all of the information to make a copy set here in the UK.
Cheers.

Yep good answer from Aaron, and he basically said the same thing we all are saying.

I want to know how you can count both rotations. real slow in a low gear with two counting clickers or did you have 2 people?

I had 2 people!

Although I nearly filmed it to count the 2 separately.

Cheers.
