ok,water froze and busted side of block.started to use it today and checked all fluids and was low on water .when i filled the radiator water poured out the left side of block almost as fast as i poured it in.should i try to get it welded and if so will it hold up?or should i just replace engine.sure hope someone has other ideas as this has been a great little workhorse with almost no problems.

Weld 'er up. Nickel rod.

Weld it, I bought my 2310 with a welded block, saved almost a grand, I had to put a head gasket in it after about 50 hrs but with over 150 more hrs no problem, I've had the tractor four years and I am very pleased. I had dealt with welded blocks on old ford N models so I understood what it should look like. If your not comfortable with welding it yourself find a good welder. Just my humble opinion

Heat the block up with a torch and nickel weld. Try to wrap it up after welding so that it cools slowly. This will help prevent future cracking. Another way to fix it is call stitching. That is when you drill a hole at the start of the crack and plug it with a Loc-Tited bolt. The next bolt is overlapped into the first and so on until you reach the end of the crack. This does work as I had two cylinder heads off my old 350 Mercruiser done. One thing about cracked blocks you need to know. Usually if the outside cracks, so does the inside. My block was busted internally and externally. I had to junk it. I did buy the boat this way for cheap money. So a new motor was figured in on the price already.

thanks all for the responses.i was hoping the welding would be the best bet.i think i will try to find a good welder in my area and let him have a go at the block rather than me try it.

If the weld won't do it.. try brazing. Cast iron accepts that with alot less problems than weld. I've seen tons of antique engines with as much brass as cast iron on the sides of the block when bad things happened.

I am suprised it got cold enough in Bamma to freeze crack your block.. The old boys down there use to drain the water out before a frost. Now a days, I would just use a tiny bit of antifreeze. Try welding and see.....or maybe you can find a good used engine or a good block.

It has been getting right nippy here is Bama this winter. Of course it will be 70 degrees one day and by the weekend we have a low of 16. The current temp is 25 deg.

Has anyone ever heard of a freezeplug functioning as they are designed? I know of several blocks that have frozen and cracked, and several freeze plugs that have rusted out and began leaking, But never, ever, heard of a freezeplug blowing out due to ice expansion and preventing a block from cracking.

I think freeze plugs is a misnomer, I believe the openings
are in the block as a clean out after it's cast...

I've heard that as well. Can't verify either.. except that I have seen frozen blocks with no welsh plugs popped out.

Freeze plug is definetly the wrong nomencature. These openenings are designed to remove sand after the casting process.

They have nothing to do with protection from freezing coolant.

lol, thanks for the question, and yes it has a freeze plug and it is just fine.freeze plug apparently did not freeze at all.now if the block was as strong as the plug i would be in great shape.

Norm,

We had a forklift at work where the "freezeplug" actually split before the block. Maybe just luck was on our side, but I agree. Most cracked blocks (because of cold weather) that I have seen; the "freezeplug" was still intact.

I bought a 67 ford galaxie cheap along time ago. The dumb sob rebuilt the motor and wanted to test drive it but he had not bought antifreeze. Well it got colder then expected(colorado) and the water just gushed out. He thought the block was cracked. I did not know but when I got into it I just replaced a couple of plugs with those funky rubber ones. It ran just fine. I sold for $. I guess I was lucky!!

ok, repaired cracked block, used j.b.weld on the outside area and a auto machine shop recomended a glass block sealer thru the radiator for the inside of the water jackets.so far so good.have used for 3 days now and not a hint of a leak.if this holds up will be the best 10 dollars i ever spent.even if i have to resort to a nickel weld later i still feel like this fix was worth a try .

I just had my 99 dodge with the 5.9 cummins block repaired. I used the locknstitch method. Seems to be good solid repair. This is not a patch like epoxy. Welding cast is not something I wanted done. I opted for the cold repair. I had a 3 inch crack. Was done in the frame. This made it a bit costly as the location was not the easiest to get to. If the location is accessible this would work great. Trained people all over the country. Go to www.locknstitch.com. I spent about a hour on the site doing the research. I do not think it would be that hard to do yourself. Call them up and they can tell you if there is someone in your area trained. I am sold on it. This saved me about 5-8k for a block exchange. Probably could get it done for a few hundred bucks.

I'd be surprised if that glass block sealer did much.. sisnce the 1700 has no circulating pump... hopefully it did though.
