The reason i don't know much about it is i just bought it last weekend they handed me the starter i know buying something and not hearing it run. I guess i'm going on hope and a prayer. Bought it from a farmer most at least tell the truth. I know i use to farm and most i knew was trust worthy. But i'm pretty handy on working on things so i hope to get it going. You could see on the side of the starter where they have been tapping on it. So something i've learned in my older age is it's easier to ask Questions and find out all you can about something then to fix the mistakes you make by not asking any questions. And i like tinkering with stuff like that. So i want to thank all you guys for the information.

At first i thought that what it was but since then i found a small flat spot on the left side of the tranny i had to burn the paint and there it was 187d- serial no.. I'm not sure theres much differance between the 186 and the 187?But enough about me all i want to know is something about this tractor?

Ok guys i've had t his a couple of months now i know a bit more about these things now. The starter, if your going to keep the tractor go to hoye and buy a good starter. the hitichi starters might be cheap but thats exactly what they are CHEAP. I bought my tractor non running so i needed a starter to get it going, burnt the cheap starter up trying to get it going. It was a 9 tooth but but the tractor had a 11 tooth but the hitichi book said it would work , i had to shave the nose of it because it would hit the flywheel and lock the motor up. Ended up buying hoye starter. It has more torque and does not get hot like the cheap starter. The cheap starter gets hot very quick. But after replaceing the injector pump, the front pto or ( shaft front drive)had to split the tractor for the 4 wheel drive and a few other things i have it purring. Looks like it will be a nice tractor. moral to the story be carefull of the cheap starters! Also i tried to have the old one rebuilt by a shop but it was dead they could not fix it.

If by "Hitichi" starter, you mean "Hitachi", that is the Yanmar OEM installed starter.

Oem or not it's about half the starter hoye sells. Call and ask them they will tell you. I learned the $$ way.

I doubt we are talking about a genuine Japanese Hitachi. Let's hope theirs will also last 30 years.
