Hey guys. A bud of mine is looking at a 1820 with a FEL. The price sounds good but being that I am so new to the tractor/Yanmar scene I couldn't offer too much input. The dealer said it was rated at 24-25 hp. I think I read somewhere it was rated at 20-21? Now (I don't know much about buying a FEL) I have read about sub frames for FEL'S. Should this unit have a sub frame for the FEL? Is that a standard? Also what things should he look out for on the 1820's? Any problems more common than others and how is parts availability?

The 1820 is 22hp. Subframes are most often used with backhoes. Frm time to time you will see FELs that have frame work that goes under the rear end or the rear axle.

A matched loader from a reliable manufacturer, such as Koyker, will be fine with the mounting system that is called for by the manufacturer.

I would find another dealer. If this one is either ignorant of commonly accepted* HP ratings, or choosing to stretch the number, would you really want to spend thousands of dollars there? There are too many competent and honest dealers out there to continue to tolerate the dregs.

*While there are a few models that may be exceptions, and a few dealers who hold to lower figures, most dealers we have contact with agree that the 1.2 rule is generally accurate....1.2 x the first two model numbers yields engine HP. 1.2 x 18=21.6, which is often rounded to 22...but no higher.

I agree about the dealer. He has decent prices from what I can tell. The problem is he charges an arm and a leg for service and offers no waranty on his grey's. I guess if you know what to look for when looking at a used tractor and research the mod of tractor you can come out ok. He sold me my 1700D as a 25 HP. I did a little research and, as I said in another post, found it was a BD and found out the true HP rating. I did some home work befor I purchased it and took some one who was knowledgable on diesal engins and had a general knowledge on tractors with me and ended out pretty darn good. I would have loved to have been able to include a FEL but prices and The fact that I think for what I am going to do with the unit a slip scoop would suffice. Any way do you have a an opinion on the 1820 as a reliable unit provided it is in good mecahnical shape?

All Yanmars are reliable, assuming they are in good mechanical condition, which only an onsite inspection can determine.
