Help--Im looking at a 187D with loader but there is a problem with the 3rd range, 1st and 2nd are fine but when you put it in third high range it won't move the machine and will stall it out at idle. The guy selling it says its just an adjustment but?? Is this a major problem?? Its selling for 2500.00 and has 860 hrs on it. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks

Very difficult to assess without seeing/operating the unit. However....if it is "just an adjustment" suggest to the seller that he "make the adjustment", or get it done since it is "just an adjustment." Doesn't make sense to me that a seller would not get it resolved if he is CERTAIN it is simple.

Hi Guys, me again, the guy with the 187D with the bad high range.
I went back to see the guy but got his son and he said his dad won,t be working on anything he in the hospital not doing too good . The son said if I wanted it give him 2000.00 for it and I told him I would go 1800.00 and he said take it. I guess I made a good deal. Now to find out whats wrong with it.
Wife ain,t too happy but I am. Anyone have a manual for sale cheap or photo copies of the high /low range gear box?

look towards hoyetractor.com for a quick manual.

use the tractor, make sure all fluids are correct, check for grinding noises, loose shifters, etc. you may find the problem easily. Hopefully it isn't anything major. If it is not, you've got a major steal on the tractor... Nice find, good luck!

Wheezer,

You probably did pretty good. You can't buy a decent lawn tractor for that price. Worse-comes-to-worst, if it is an American Yanmar, you can part the thing out for far more than you paid.

Yanmars are really great tractors that are real easy to repair.

My only concern is -- is it a Yanmar 187D? A good friend of mine here in West Virginia -- and we aren't that far from Western PA, knew I had a high regard for Yanmar tractors. He recently came to visit and proudly told me that he bought a 187D with about 400 hours. He says the decals show it to be a 187D.

I still haven't seen the thing. He said it looks like new. But, he insists that it is two wheel drive! The seller told him the "D" stands for "Diesel." (For any newbies, the Yanmar "D" stands for 4WD).

These tractors are about 25 years old. 860 hours is certainly possible if it was a one-owner tractor, and used for occasional grading and snow plowing, and maybe a little mowing. Figure 40 to 60 hours per year for most non-commercial users. If it really is a 187D, with a loader, it is worth well more than double what you paid for it -- once the transmission is fixed.

If you can, post some pictures.

Good Luck,

Knute

Excellent deal, even if you have to spend $1000 to get the trannie fixed, still a great price, if it is as reported. Sounds like the powershift clutch packs might need work. It would be more likely to slip in higher range than lower.

Hi Guys, me again. I have been messing around with my new toy like a kid at Christmas time and haven't checked this for a while. Hey Whiskey, thanks much for the offer, as soon as I find someone with a fax machine I will get you a number. I really appreciate the help and info everyone has given me and as soon as I get it cleaned up a little I will post some pictures.

Maybe a little bit of a mess being the pages are printed front and back but I could scan then and email, deponds what you need and how many pages.

Hey, that sounds great. I would need the listing for the clutch pack assembly
Hi/Low range, parts list and general break down of how things come apart.
Thanks Whiskey, I appreciate this.

Hey, I didn't forget you guys, been a little busy with the "LITTLE BEAST".
Wanted to post some pictures but I can't figure out how. Thanks to everyone who helped out with info etc, I'm getting ready to tear into it and get it fixed. Also someone told me over the weekend that they can cross reference J.D. parts for Yanmar, any truth to that ?

I doubt it, never heard of it, but why would you want to?

I would be surprised if some one could but, by now you should have the part number and with the help of a good John Deere Dealer I would not be surprised if he could make if happen....being you suspect it to be a range gear and the fact thet Deere and Yanmar were buddies for so long it could be that the same range gear is used back when Yanmar built Deeres compact line of equipment.......don't count on it.....

Anywho, here's a link http://www.yanmar.com/tractor/dealerlocator.asp click on your state and you'll get a list of your local dealers if none are still in biz I have a local authorized Yanmar Dealer that would ship out parts...or the dealers on this site could get you the part I would guess.

It could be something like a shift fork in the transmission. can you take the top off where the range shtf leaver is look. I once had a cub that had no second gear and all dhis required was a little refurb to the fork and it worked fime. Someone may have jammed the leaver and broke the shifter not a gear.

I originally missed the part where you said it stalls, I assume you mean when you let out the clutch try to go forward. I suspect it is attempting to select 2 gears due to a bent shifter fork or sheared pin. You will probably find the problem if you remove the cover.
