Yanmar 2000 New Owner with 5\' Bush Hog

Hello Guys, I'm a planing on using a 5' Bush Hog with my tractor. Does any one feel this Bush Hog is to large for my Yanmar 2000? I have 8 gears low and high and on my PTO I have 1,2&3. What would be the recomemmend Gear I should use when cutting weeds and Brush?

5' is too big, you need a 4', use only 1st pto gear, and 5th or 6th speed, depending on conditions.

As long as you are not trying to cut anything too thick or saplings, your 5ft hog should work. Keep the PTO in 1st gear only.

You may need to add some weight to the frontend of the tractor. I did on my 3110D and I can tell a difference with my 5ft. cutter hooked up.

Overrun clutch? If yours does not have one built in get one. otherwise you cannot stop the thing unless you can get it out of gear. Nnowhere to jump.

AS long as the 5' does not choke down the tractor and the weight does not causr the tractor to be hard to control it will be of of operated carefully.

Try look at a J-Bar Scorpion. It has four wheels, so you can adjust the height and to keep the weight off the trac tor. It also has 4 bush hog type blades on a single hub. Once you get that turing it cut lots of bushes with little power and no weight on the tractor. I have a picture of one on my web site see my profile

hi all,
i have a 5' on my 1601. I'd say it's too big, if I want to move fast. Also, I'd like to emphasize staying in gear 1. I ran it in 2 (750 RPM i think), it's a bit wild... Could smell gear oil and the tractor was a bit unsafe... So, with that said, a 4' would be easy, 5' maybe possible.... -arthr

I have a 4' Howse on my 1602D, and I'd say it's about the right size. I was using it mostly just to cut tall grass, so I was running mine in 2 also, but after reading the info on this forum, I'll leave it in low from now on. Seemed to do a better job on the grass tho when I spun it up faster. I now have a ZTR to mow with, so the tractor get used for other things.
