How do I check the oil level if there is no actual dipstick? Just put enough in that I can see the oil? Thanks.

Which oil level are you checking (engine, trans, 4wd)? They all have a dipstick.

Engine. I swear I can't find an oil dipstick. All I see is like a filler hole. That's it. Thanks.

The oil fill plug should have a dipstick under it. It's the lower one in this photo. I posted this when an owner mixed up his transmission and oil dipsticks and asked which is which.

Incidental - YM2000 specifies five quarts of oil but I use four. The white wire in the photo shows where 4 quarts fills it to on the dipstick, well within the acceptable range in my opinion. I would fill with five quarts if I ran this tractor hard and continuous. But in mostly backhoe service with a little loader use, its not working that hard - and it consumes no oil at all between changes.

It is on the starter side of the engine. California's picture is the 'newer' style (YM2000A and 2000B). The older YM2000s could have one that looks like the link below. Same location though.

Hmm. If your fill plug really is lacking the dipstick: looking at the photo above, it seems that the transmission dipstick could be used as a temporary substitute, with that shoulder at 6.25 inches indicating four quarts.

I don't think anyone has ever defined if the plug should be screwed in when measuring the oil level but I've decided on the following for my use: Threaded plug, just rest it on the last thread without screwing it in. Push-in plug, push it in to get the oil level. If anyone has a link to Yanmar's recommendation on this subject, I'd like to see it.

so do you see it or not? its on the engine on the starter side and is under the cap...made onto it/. The trans stick in ontop of the transmission below the front of the seat?

And claifornia, i was under the assumption that any threaded dipsick should just be inserted in the hole not treaded to read. I forget where i read this..i use to thread into read but that is harder and more timeconsuming and really it makes more sense to design it to just put it to the treads and pull out to read it.

Pretty much every time I have seen a manual specify (ATV, lawn mower, etc) it has said to just set it on the threads (don't screw in). My thoughts are that a little more oil is almost always better than not enough oil so I just do it that way all the time.

I referenced the same dip stick that hoye shows in this post http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/oil-fuel-lubricants/331320-yanmar2000.html?highlight=#post4044587 Maybe someone has removed it and installed a plug (or something) in it's place

All Japanese threaded dipsticks just sit on the threads for checking.

Where is your filler hole? The dipstick is right beside the filter.

Page 67 of my YM240 operator manual agrees with this: "Insert dipstick to rest on threads but do not screw it in. Oil level should be between full mark (upper) and end of dipstick." This is also the procedure for checking the transmission lubricant. It also matches with procedures I have read in operator manuals for ATVs and motorcycles with threaded dipsticks.

Now - what about the rubber-plug type of dipstick? Push it in or let it rest on top also? Is there a Yanmar source describing this?

I am guessing that on my YM1700 Aka YM195 with the rubber plug type dipstick it should be pushed in. My reasoning is that the oil spec in the YM195 manual calls for 1 gallon of oil. When freshly changed with a filter it is right on the full mark. However, i doubt that 1/3" is that critical.

i was thinking the same thing, that someone installed something else?
