Well, I am not new to tractors, my Dad and I have farmed for many years and have done routine service as well as major work on large farm tractors. Suchas TA and bull gear changes on IH 1066 and 856 tractors and many IH diesel rebuilds, so we are not afraid to work on tractors.

On to my question, Dad has a Ford 8N that is in good conditon, but he wants a compact diesel and we have been looking for an IH 284 with 4wd, have had 0 luck finding one anywhere in the central or eastern US. So, we are looking at some of the Jap. imports. I have located a 2210D on Ebay in IL with possibly low hours that looks pretty good and we will try to look at it before the end of the sale as well. But I have a couple of questions about this tractor...

Is the PTO really live or does the powershift tranny make it feel live since you don't have to clutch between forward and reverse? And how many speeds does it really have, I have seen as low as 9 and as high as 15 listed on various sites. The 2210 sounds like a good solid tractor to us, but we don't have what we consider to be a reputible gray dealer that we can find in central IL so we have not really been able to look at them.

Any input would be great.

Thanks Matt

An ongoing debate, partially obscured in semantics. Some say live but not indpendent, some say not live. Fact is the pto runs on the same shaft as the transmission. Using the Powershift allows one to shift from a forward gear to reverse without disengaging the pto. PTO will run in neutral, but the clutch must be engaged for the pto to run.

We're a bit (45 minutes NE of Cincinnati) from central IL, but some say we're worth the drive /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif 2210D is a very good unit. Make certain your seller/dealer will support you. More important than proximity is willingness/ability to give you service support, parts support, etc. Equally important is the quality of the unit to start with. Those sold on ebay, speaking in general, do not have the best reputation. I'm sure others will offer more/other thoughts for you. I personally think you'd be much better off with a good 2210D than an IH284, and I do think the 284 is a pretty nice tractor.

I would agree with Wayne, LMTC. He has an excellent reputation on this board (I've never even met him let alone bought enything from LMTC.) Look at his models then compare with what the 2110D looks like. Compare the comments from your dealer & LMTC to see whose warranty/support would be better if needed. Bottom line, do due diligence to ease your mind. Ask questions of the board if you need more info.

I bought a 2210D from LMTC a couple of months ago. I love it.

I agree that the YM2210D is a good choice for the horsepower level you are looking for. Keep in mind that it is a 2 cylinder, and as such, does not run as smoothly as a 3cyl especially at lower engine speeds. It does have more torque than an equivalent hp 3cyl. I have a YM1110D (much smaller) and it too is a 2 cylinder. It does bang ("Yammer Hammer") at startup, but once warmed a little and run at pto speeds, it is quieter than my 2 cyl gasoline lawn tractor.

Also, you should look at a YM2210D before just buying off of e-bay. In comparison to the 8N, it is smaller and lighter.

Hi,
Just registered although I have used this forum many times in the past and found everyones input very helpfull. The reason I am posting on this thread is that I happen to be the owner of this 2210d that was on ebay. As has happened to many others in the past my auction was also removed from ebay by the request of Yanmar. gbirky is right on with his comments I also had a ford but it was a 9n. The 2210d will also take more time to get from point a to point b. Of all the gears availible there is not anything resembling a road gear in a 2210D but they make up for that with portability and super low gears. Also to someone new to these type tractors going from a 8n ford to a yanmar at almost 48" wide with 4x4 it should be mentioned that in many cases the 2210d and others like it are not going to be as stable as the wider tractors.I am not running down these tractors I really like them. All machinery has its limitations and if these narrow tractors are used on steep hillsides something bad will sooner or latter happen. Example I was aware of the limitations of this tractor when I bought it but what I was not aware of was the pure torque of the little engine on 2210d I was mowing some trails and this required me to cross a creek going up the far side that is steep the tractor lifted the front end up and the little engine did not even slow down and the super grip of the rear tires caused me to clutch in a hurry /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif This tractor would of done a back flip. That said these tractors do many things well. I especilly like the small size and width for getting into small places, low gearing, very little fuel useage and low/easy maintenance. As far as the live pto I personally would not call it live. My upbringing on the farm was if you push the clutch and the pto stops it is not live. However with the power shift you can go from foward to reverse and the pto will not stop but the attachment will still give the tractor momentem. Finally, find a yanmar with power shift check it out I think you will like them. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The fuel usage is a good point. The YM1301D in my signature is a real workhorse. I ran it for 8 hours doing loader work, and I only burned about 2.5 gallons of diesel. You'll never do that with any gasser!
