Yanmar 240
Just purchased a YM240d from a friend. Has rear mount mower, blade and 4' tiller. Got this for C$3500. The owner says the tractor is difficult to start, and he is using quickstart to assist starting. I did not see any smoke on running, even with the mower. Has 800h on the meter-?1800 I'm new to diesel, and would appreciate any input and suggestions.

What is "quickstart"? Are you talking about either? Don't use it. These little engines can go kaboom with either!!

You might check the comprression, low compression usually causes hard starting............

Are you using the compression release? These little motors crank kind of slow, sometimes if you don't, which will make it harder to start. Just use it till the oil light goes out and then release it, while cranking and it should start easy.

You have several variables to investigate. Cranking speed, throttle position, compression, fuel quality. On my YM240 hard starting was caused by bad fuel.

Doping that old fuel with Power Service made a major improvement. Then replacing the fuel solved the problem. Here's a thread describing my experience:
YM240 hard starting remedied.

I also set up the Thermostart per the manual so it heats whenever the starter is engaged. 5 seconds of pre-start cranking with compression released, intended to circulate the oil, also heats the incoming air and eases starting.

Listen to the sound file at the bottom of my Yanmar photos referenced below. This YM240 starts on the first full compression stroke.

Yes, quickstart = ether. Did't realize it dangerous....

Fresh fuel used, unlikely but stil possible.

How do one check compression?

If a diesel engine has a precombustion chamber, never use ether! Usually if it has glow plugs don't use it either! (Pun!)

ether is bad for these engines and may lead to other types of failures. I have a hard to start tractor and resort to other methods that are less invasive. but, if you are just buying the tractor, you may want to factor this problem/condition into the price.

the thing about ether is that it causes an "explosion" in the engine, so to speak, therefore causing some incremental damage... imagine that you needed to blow part of your head each cold morning to get started... anyway, my funny analogy... good luck! -arthr

If it is hard to start in summer then there is something wrong. If it is hard to star in winter then it is a Yanmar.....ha ha! You'll need to keep the engine warm in winter. Yanmar has two features to ease starting. The compression release and the thermostart (most have it). You should not need the thermostart in the summer time... Are u using the compression release? Is your starter turning over the engine ok? I think these starters could have a little more torque.. Alot of guys have had better luck after rebuilding the starter... I have not had to do mine yet....

Dick,

Glad to see you're back! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hadn't heard from you for awhile, although after checking your posts, I do see that you've been doing a little posting this last week or so.

Hope all is well and that your wife is continuing to do well. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
