"How do one check compression?"

I seriously doubt that any homeowner/shadetree mechanic can/would check compression on a diesel. I would make sure you have good fuel, no air or water in the lines, good air filter, muffler not plugged, and check valve clearances. My YM2000B, same engine, starts instantly, hot or cold.

Ah yes, it is a little bit harder than a gas engine, since there's no spark plug to remove, good point..........

California,

Nice little sound and video clips you have! I had seen your photos before but never noticed the clips at the bottom. You are WAY ahead of me with this kumpooter stuff. Nice!!!!!!! Now I can here "my" little Yanny even if I am stuck inside...kinda cool!

thanks, Peter

Here are some suggestions that have improved the starting on my 240d: Read the operator's manual about starting, lubed the linkage on the decompression lever so it moves easy, fully charge the battery the night before using, remove + cable when parked for more than a week, had starter rebuilt, replaced battery cables and sanded the contact surfaces for the ground wire. In winter, store battery in warm place, trickle charge occasionally, lift entire air cleaner off of intake and use hair dryer to blow hot air to warm intake before and during starting and first minute of running. Learn to use thermostart (if it still works). Replace air filter often. Read manual to learn how to prime injectors, use fuel shutoff valve. Use powersource diesel fuel additive (from Walmart). Next winter I hope to install a block heater, or try the electric oil heater under the tarp-covered engine.

Like some of the other guys mentioned, either is bad. I work on light truck diesels and I hear guys all the time saying they use the stuff, then they tell me about the air boxes that have been blown off, or the need for a short block. Basicly, if it needs either to start, someting is wrong, it doesnt matter what kind of diesel it is. In my experience, I have found they can actuall get addicted to it. The combustion of either is so hot and voilent that it can dammage the rings causing lower compression and then even harder starting. If for some reason you were to need a strating aid for diag purposes, a "little" bit of WD-40 while cranking helps. Plus its lubricated. You still shouldnt need it.
I'm new to the Yanmar thing, but my YM2000 starts on the 1st comp stroke as well since I cleaned the chassis ground. Use the KISS method and you'll find the issue.

I am quite willing at this stage to burn the tractor, but seeing that it is so hard to start, I guess it's not going to burn either. I followed the advise received, and nothing seems to work. Now that I've been working with the tractor, I can add the following. On starting, white smoke is present, which clears almost immediately after starting. Engine runs smoothly, with no smoke or knocking. When warm, it starts easily. Cranking speed sounds good, fuel is clean, using decompression which is working, fresh battery etc. I am thinking of taking out the pump and injectors, and have them checked. No difference with thermostart, which seems to draw power as the indicator light dims slightly on using it. Any more ideas?

You can check the thermostart. Be sure the little container is full of fuel, then take off the air cleaner. Look into the carb, while you turn the key to the left, and you should see a little flame, if its working. That is how it heats to make it start easier. Maybe its not getting fuel. At least that is how I checked mine.

is there any danger looking at the intake manifold with the flame from the thermostart? I'm still troubleshooting mine and will try this, but want to know if i should have the fire extingisher close by!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Thanks, Dick. -art

No danger, its just a very small flame. Just a little to heat the air going into the the engine. That way it makes it kind of like its warm out. And if you get the engine rolling with the decompression lever, when you release it, it should start up, like it would if it was warm out. It works for me, when its cold. The little electric wire in there looks something like a cigarette lighter end and it sets the small amount of fuel aflame in there.

I'm not real familliar with the injection system on this tractor, but I wonder if anyone else thinks this may be a pump timing issue. Just a thought, its comon on trucks.
