When I crank my 2620, it runs for a second or two then shuts off.

The last time I used it, I noticed a puddle of fuel under the fuel bowl. It had a very slow leak before, but this was much worse. I started it up and used it anyway for about two hours. The engine quit for no apparent reason while doing some light loader work, but restarted OK. I parked it and I put a collapsed moving box under it. It was completely saturated with fuel a short time later. I bought a new fuel bowl gasket, but I haven't installed it yet. When I went to use it this week, it wouldn't stay running. Like I wrote in the first sentence, it will run for a second or two then quit.

The Yanmar tractors seem pretty simple to fix IF you know what to fix. I can turn a wrench, but I don't know how to diagnose this problem for a diesel engine. Could it be related to the fuel leak? Can anyone tell me what to do next?

Thank you!!!

Got new fuel filter, bowl and o-ring gasket, that's 1/2 way there. Now for the rest.

I suggest that you fix the known issue first. It will save a lot of headaches. A new filter would be nice if you have it if not that is the next thing.

Echoing the posters above......new filter, o ring......most likely will fix the leak. If not, maybe the bowl or fitting is cracked, or the fuel line going into the bowl is cracked/leaking.

First time I replaced my filter the old seal around the filter was so dry it fell apart. Which I made another. Razor blade and a drop of super glue to shorten one. Replaced the filter a few times since. Nylon washer on my Throttle done the same thing.

Oh, should need a YM2620 Parts Manual, the closest parts manual and very related to your machine is the YM2420. It's FREE on the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group site at the link in my signature. :)

Thank you for all the help! It seems that everyone thinks the leak has caused air to enter my fuel line. If I fix the leak and bleed the line, I should be fine, correct?

Problems are not necessarily binary. Sometimes there are compound or multiple issues. On my JD tractor made by Yanmar i could have crud in the fuel tank, clogged filter under the fuel tank, cracked lines running from that filter to the filter by the engine and fuel pump, and then issues with that filter by the fuel pump. You or I should fix the obvious problems first and then keep going if there are still issues. I have a spare tank filter and a spare pump filter sitting on my shelf, probably for 5 years. Crud in the tank caused clogs in filters. Not interested in trying to find filters on the weekend which is when I do most of my tractor work.

My Yanmar engine has a little pump lever on the fuel pump/distributor to help purge air after changing filters. Kind of handy and helps the engine start up smoother and quicker than if I did not have that little pump. Once purged of air and running smoothly you should be good unless there is some other issue.

you never know until you try......

but yes- if you fix the leak and it runs, you're good to go.
