WOW long post. You know you never know? I was maybe thinking you just did not look, maybe bought the brand x filter for GM and a Fram (i know fram suck) for the JD and the Lawnmower filter for your kohler? Yea GM has a number of filters, the fat long one the short fat one that fit the larger small blocks and then there is the long thin one and short thin one that fit many car and 4 and v6 appications those alone must cover 60% of applications. But as your aware if it screws on that does not mean it meets the specs that the motor needs. If the bypass and flow are the same just volume is different than there compatible, but just cause they screw on there does not mean that. I was trying to make sure you understand that which it sounds like you do.
