10W30 or 5W40 sound like a good idea for your climate.

Not sure I agree with your calcs however. TSC's 15W40 is presently $20 for a 2.5 gallon (10 quarts) jug. That's $8 per gallon.

It must depend on region. Clicking the link in your post, I see $20 in Northern California.

I have always been a big fan of Mobil Delvac 15w40, have worked in a diesel shop for years and this is one of the top rated oils, now that doesn't mean its the best for every application but its pretty good. For years I used Rotella T6 full synthetic 5w40 and loved it and could always get it at a reasonable cost at Walmart for $19 a gallon, since they have raised the price in my area and it is up to $24 or more at times. I have switched to Schaeffer's Supreme 9000 5w40 and love it even more. I have rep in my area and I just order it from him and pick it up at his house. It if a superior oil, IMO, and I love the 5w40 for my winter and summer use.

Buy it with his zip code and have it shipped. You can do the same thing with Home Depot. The always put wood stoves on clearance in the spring. One of the wood burning forums always has a thread to see what zip codes are first to offer the sale price or which ones to do it period. And then people buy them useing that zip. I bought my Englander 30 that way several years ago...still have yet to install it though it's been sitting around here for several years in the box!

Ha, walked into Walmart last night. Wife went to the clearance racks, I strolled over to automotive.

Found that Wally-World carries a bunch of 15W40 in name brands. There was one 10W30 diesel formula in a MotorCraft 5qt jug for the Ford 2N, 8N, 9N, NAA, etc. tractors. Also said it meets other similar sized tractors for both gas and diesel tractors. $18 5qt jug.

There were 2 other brands with 5W40 as well. $29 5qt jug.

I would agree with California's comment. Oil is priced different in various regions. Some due to taxes of course and other priced because of distribution delivery distances.

I've learned from this thread to price the 10W30 and 5W40 oil when there is a need.

The Walmart here carries several different 15w40 brands and also carry 10w30 and 10w40 diesel oils too. Not to bad on prices, just have to check around first. TSC and Bomgaars also carry their own brands plus a couple of name brands too.

I've been using Walmart 15-40 for Yrs.. Always a good price. And the Fred. supplied dealer I bought it from gave me a Fram # for the filter so I get out cheap! And out of there quick. Which is another big plus for me.........

I use mostly walmart oil. I have used it in lots of stuff for ears. One thing I just noticed is that walmart 15w40 oil is not JASO certified or says it meets those specs. So I won't use it in my ATV. Rotella still says it so it's OK in the wet clutch motors. But this time I just bought motorcycle oil so I could run 10w40 in it for the cold.
